Verbs with sprechen

After this lesson you can confidently form, separate and correctly use key verbs with sprechen (absprechen, ansprechen, aussprechen, nachsprechen, versprechen, zusprechen) in typical sentences.

In this lesson you will learn important verbs built from the stem sprechen. Different prefixes (ab-, an-, aus-, nach-, ver-, zu-) change the meaning and sometimes the grammar (separable vs. inseparable). All of these verbs take haben in the perfect and have a regular Partizip II.

2Separable or inseparable?

In the Perfekt, all these verbs use haben and the Partizip II (past participle) at the end of the sentence:

  • Wir haben alles abgesprochen. (We agreed on everything.)
  • Sie hat mich auf meinen Fehler angesprochen. (She talked to me about my mistake.)
  • Er hat seinen Namen deutlich ausgesprochen. (He pronounced his name clearly.)
  • Die Schüler haben den Text nachgesprochen. (The pupils repeated the text.)
  • Ich habe es dir versprochen. (I promised it to you.)
  • Das Gericht hat ihr den Schaden zugesprochen. (The court awarded her the damages.)

3Meaning and typical patterns

absprechen

  1. etwas absprechen = to arrange / agree on something
  • Wir sprechen morgen den Ablauf ab. (We will agree on the procedure tomorrow.)
  • Sie haben abgesprochen, wer fährt. (They agreed who will drive.)
  1. jemandem etwas absprechen = to deny that someone has something
  • Man darf ihm den Mut nicht absprechen. (You must not deny that he has courage.)

ansprechen

  1. jemanden ansprechen = to start talking to someone
  • Ich habe sie im Zug angesprochen. (I talked to her on the train.)
  1. ein Thema/Problem ansprechen = to address a topic/problem
  • Die Lehrerin hat das Problem offen angesprochen. (The teacher addressed the problem openly.)
  1. impersonal: etwas spricht jemanden an = something appeals to someone
  • Das Angebot spricht mich gar nicht an. (The offer does not appeal to me at all.)

aussprechen

  1. ein Wort/den Namen aussprechen = to pronounce
  • Kannst du dieses Wort aussprechen? (Can you pronounce this word?)
  1. sich aussprechen = to say fully what you think or feel
  • Lass ihn sich erst aussprechen. (Let him say everything first.)

nachsprechen

  • jemandem etwas nachsprechen = to repeat after someone
  • Die Kinder sprechen der Lehrerin jeden Satz nach. (The children repeat every sentence after the teacher.)
  • Sprich mir bitte nach: „Guten Morgen.“ (Please repeat after me: “Guten Morgen.”)

versprechen

  1. jemandem etwas versprechen
  • Er hat mir Hilfe versprochen. (He promised me help.)
  1. ein Versprechen halten / brechen
  • Du musst dein Versprechen halten. (You must keep your promise.)
  1. sich versprechen = to make a mistake while speaking
  • Entschuldigung, ich habe mich versprochen. (Sorry, I misspoke.)

zusprechen

  1. jemandem etwas zusprechen (official decision, court, authority)
  • Das Gericht hat ihr eine Entschädigung zugesprochen. (The court granted her compensation.)
  1. jemandem Mut / Trost zusprechen
  • Die Freunde haben ihm Mut zugesprochen. (The friends encouraged him.)
