Distinguishing the meanings of the verb weisen with prefixes

In modern German, bare „weisen“ appears mainly in fixed expressions, for example:

Note on separability:

  • separable: „abweisen“, „aufweisen“, „einweisen“, „zuweisen“, „wegweisen“, „überweisen“ (in the basic money sense), „anweisen“ etc.
  • inseparable: „verweisen“, „hinweisen“ etc.

Example of a separable form in sentences

  • Present: „Der Chef weist die Bitte ab.“ (The boss rejects the request.)
  • Simple past: „Der Chef wies die Bitte ab.“
  • Perfect: „Der Chef hat die Bitte abgewiesen.“

3.1 „zuweisen“ vs. „einweisen“

  • „zuweisen“: distribution/allocation of tasks, places, rights.
    • „Die Stadt weist den Familien Wohnungen zu.“ (The city assigns flats to the families.)
  • „einweisen“: admitting into an institution or introducing into a task.
    • „Der Arzt weist den Patienten in eine Klinik ein.“ (The doctor admits the patient to a clinic.)

  • „abweisen“: more formal, abstract (applications, complaints, people at a border).
  • „wegweisen“: concrete, physical, sending away from a place.
