As you may already know, verbs in German are often combined with prefixes (Präfix). Each combination produces a new meaning, and understanding these meanings and usages presents a challenge for German learners. The verb weisen has the root meaning of to point/guide, to expel, or to forfeit.

Example: - Der Zeiger weist auf 5. (The hand points to 5)

- Ich weise einem Schüler die Anfangsgründe im Rechnen. (I show a student the basics of arithmetic)

- Meine Mutter weist mir aus dem Haus. (My mother throws me out of the house)

In addition, when combined with other prefixes, the verb weisen also takes on a variety of meanings:

to show, reveal, demonstrate 

Der Hut weist keine Gebrauchtsspuren auf.

(No signs of use are visible on the hat)

Das Mädchen wird an einen Spezialisten verwiesen.

Mein Chef weist mir zu viele Aufgaben zu.

(My boss usually assigns me too many tasks)
