Distinguishing the meaning of the verb heben with prefixes

After this lesson you can distinguish the main prefix verbs with heben and use them correctly in common expressions.

In this lesson you will see how the meaning of heben changes when you add different prefixes. Many of these verbs are separable, some are not, and several look similar but mean very different things – important for precise B1/B2 communication.

1Basic meaning of heben

heben on its own usually means “to lift / to raise” something.

jemanden / etwas heben: Er kann das Kind kaum heben. (He can hardly lift the child.)
die Hand heben: Wer dafür ist, hebe bitte die Hand. (Those in favor, please raise your hand.)

erheben	raise; demand; protest	Die Bürger erheben Einspruch.	The citizens lodge an objection.
unterheben	fold in gently (cooking)	Zum Schluss heben wir die Sahne unter.	Finally we fold in the cream.
verheben (sich)	overstrain oneself by lifting	Ich habe mich beim Umzug verhoben.	I overstrained myself during the move.

Separable vs. non-separable

Separable: abheben, anheben, aufheben, ausheben, unterheben, sich verhoben haben
Non-separable: beheben, entheben, erheben

Verb-second examples:

Ich hebe das Geld ab. (I withdraw the money.)
Die Firma hebt die Preise an. (The company raises the prices.)
Der Techniker behebt den Fehler. (The technician fixes the error.)

3Meanings in detail

3.1 abheben

Remove something: Die Kassiererin hebt den Deckel ab. (The cashier lifts off the lid.)
Withdraw money: Ich hebe morgen Geld ab. (I will withdraw money tomorrow.)
Plane taking off: Das Flugzeug hebt pünktlich ab. (The plane takes off on time.)

3.2 anheben

Slightly raise, physically or figuratively:

Kannst du das Regal kurz anheben? (Can you lift the shelf briefly?)
Die Regierung hebt die Steuern an. (The government raises taxes.)

3.3 aufheben

Pick up from the ground: Heb bitte die Jacke auf. (Please pick up the jacket.)
Cancel, annul: Das Gericht hebt das Urteil auf. (The court overturns the verdict.)
Keep, save: Das Foto heben wir gut auf. (We will keep the photo safe.)

3.4 ausheben

Dig something out of the ground:

Die Bauarbeiter heben ein Loch aus. (The construction workers dig a hole.)

3.5 beheben

Only “fix / remove a problem”:

Der Techniker behebt den Defekt. (The technician fixes the defect.)

3.6 entheben

Formal, often with G2 „jemandes Amtes entheben“:

Der Vorstand wird ihn seines Postens entheben. (The board will remove him from his position.)

3.7 erheben

Several fixed meanings:

Steuern erheben (levy taxes)
Einspruch erheben (lodge an objection)
sich erheben (stand up, often solemn): Alle erheben sich. (Everybody rises.)

3.8 unterheben

Cooking: fold in gently without losing air:

Wir heben das geschlagene Eiweiß unter. (We fold in the beaten egg white.)

3.9 sich verhoben haben

Colloquial: overstrain yourself when lifting:

Ich glaube, ich habe mich gestern verhoben. (I think I overstrained myself yesterday.)
