In this lesson you will learn two very important verb groups with prefixes: the verbs with räumen and the verbs with machen. They appear all the time in everyday life, especially in the household.

1aufräumen – abräumen – ausräumen

All three verbs are about “moving / removing / organizing things”, but in different situations.

aufräumen: Zimmer, Wohnung, Schreibtisch, Küche

abräumen: especially Tisch abräumen after a meal
- „Wir räumen nach dem Abendessen den Tisch ab.“ (We clear the table after dinner.)
ausräumen: Schränke, Kartons, Kisten, Regale, Kühlschrank
- „Sie räumt den Kleiderschrank aus.“ (She empties the wardrobe.)

Important difference:

aufräumen focuses on making things tidy.
ausräumen focuses on making something empty.
abräumen focuses on clearing a surface (usually a table).

Here we talk about opening/closing and switching on/off.

2.1 Non-electrical things: aufmachen – zumachen

2.2 Electrical devices: anmachen – ausmachen

Typical objects: Licht (light), Fernseher (TV), Radio, Computer, Heizung (heating).

„Vergiss nicht, den Computer auszumachen.“ (Don’t forget to switch off the computer.)
