List of common verbs used with the Dative

After this lesson you can recognize the most common Dativ verbs and build your own sentences with correct Dativ forms.

In this lesson you will learn common verbs that normally take a Dativ object, such as helfen, danken, or gefallen. These verbs are very frequent in everyday German, especially when you talk about giving help, opinions, or feelings to someone.

Short reminder: Dativ

The Dativ (3rd case) often answers the question wem? (to whom?).

  • Ich gebe dem Kind ein Buch. → wem? → dem Kind (Dativ)
  • Er hilft seiner Schwester. → wem? → seiner Schwester (Dativ)

Using them in sentences

Watch the form of the Dativ object carefully.

  • Ich helfe meinem Bruder. (not: ich helfe meinen Bruder)
  • Sie dankt ihrer Lehrerin. (she thanks her teacher)
  • Der Film gefällt mir nicht. (I don’t like the film)
  • Wir gratulieren unserer Kollegin. (we congratulate our colleague)
  • Tut dir der Kopf weh? (does your head hurt?)

Typical mistakes

  • Do not use Akkusativ for people after these verbs:
    • wrong: Ich helfe meinen Freund.
    • correct: Ich helfe meinem Freund.
  • Learn the Dativ pronouns by heart: mir, dir, ihm, ihr, uns, euch, ihnen.

Study tips

  • Write at least three own sentences for each verb using different Dativ pronouns.
  • While reading, underline all Dativ forms and check if they belong to a Dativ verb.
  • Learn in small semantic groups, e.g. verbs of feeling: gefallen, fehlen, vertrauen.
