Basic Principles of the Passive Voice

A passive sentence alters its structure based on the tense. The original object becomes the subject, and the original subject can be introduced with "von" or "durch," but it is often omitted in passive constructions.

Passive in the Present (Präsens)

• Structure: S + werden + … + Past Participle

• Example:
  Active: "Der Lehrer erklärt die Grammatik." (The teacher explains the grammar.)
  Passive: "Die Grammatik wird (vom Lehrer) erklärt." (The grammar is explained (by the teacher).)

Conjugation of werden

Passive in the Past Simple (Präteritum)

• Structure: S + wurden + … + Past Participle

• Example:
  Active: "Die Handwerker reparierten das Haus." (The craftsmen repaired the house.)
  Passive: "Das Haus wurde (von den Handwerkern) repariert." (The house was repaired (by the craftsmen).)

Passive in the Present Perfect (Perfekt)

• Structure: S + sein + … + Past Participle + worden

• Example:
  Active: "Wir haben die Blumen gepflanzt." (We planted the flowers.)
  Passive: "Die Blumen sind gepflanzt worden." (The flowers have been planted.)

Passive in the Past Perfect (Plusquamperfekt)

• Structure: S + waren + … + Past Participle + worden

• Example:
  Active: "Die Köche hatten das Gericht zubereitet." (The chefs prepared the dish.)
  Passive: "Das Gericht war (von den Köchen) zubereitet worden." (The dish had been prepared (by the chefs).)

• Example:
