Dativ – wem?

Dativ answers the question wem? (“to whom?”, “for whom?”). Typical articles:

  • Singular: dem (masc.), der (fem.), dem (neut.)
  • Plural: den + usually -n on the noun

Examples:

  • Ich helfe dem Freund. (I help the friend.)
  • Ich helfe der Schwester. (I help the sister.)

Akkusativ – wen? was?

Akkusativ answers wen? or was? (“whom?”, “what?”):

  • Singular: den (masc.), die (fem.), das (neut.)
  • Plural: die

Examples:

  • Ich sehe den Mann. (I see the man.)
  • Ich kaufe das Auto. (I buy the car.)

2Typical verbs with Dativ + Akkusativ

These verbs usually need two objects: a Dativobjekt (often a person) and an Akkusativobjekt (a thing or information).

Pattern: Subjekt + Verb + Dativobjekt + Akkusativobjekt

3Word order with Dativ and Akkusativ

Basic rule

  • Normal order: Dativ before Akkusativ

    • Ich gebe dem Kind den Ball. (“I give the child the ball.”)

  • Exception: If the Akkusativobjekt is a pronoun, it usually comes before the Dativ:

    • Ich gebe ihn dem Kind. (“I give it to the child.”)
    • Sie erklärt es mir. (“She explains it to me.”)

Position with other elements

Time–Manner–Place still applies, the objects stay together:

  • Heute gebe ich dem Chef den Bericht. (“Today I give the boss the report.”)

  1. Mixing up cases

    • Wrong: Ich gebe den Mann das Buch.
    • Correct: Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch. (“I give the man the book.”)
