1. Usage

  • Used to describe indirect speech.

a. Commonly used with the verbs: meinen, sagen, erzählen, betonen, erklären, zeigen, fragen, antworten, ankündigen, ….

  • Direct speech (Direkte Rede):

Sein Bruder sagt: „Ich bin in Laurel verliebt."

(His brother says: "I am in love with Laurel.")

  • Indirect speech (Indirekte Rede):

Sein Bruder sagt, er sei in Laurel verliebt.

(His brother says he is in love with Laurel.)

b. Used with phrases: Ich bin der Meinung/Auffassung/….(In my opinion), Laut Wissenschaftlern …(According to scientists), Nach neuesten Beweisen ….(According to the latest evidence),…...

Nach Meinungen der Forscher sollen Kinder 8 bis 10 Stunden schlafen.

(According to researchers, children should sleep 8 to 10 hours.)

  • Konjunktiv I in mandatory structures.

Gott sei Dank! (Thank God!)

Es lebe der Frieden! (Long live peace!)

  • Konjunktiv I is used to express something unreal.

Er spricht so, als ob er der Klügste auf der Welt sei.

(He speaks as if he were the most intelligent person in the world.)

!!!!! Note: Konjunktiv I is most commonly used in formal language in newspapers, radio, news, and official reports. In everyday interactions, instead of using Konjunktiv I, you can use Konjunktiv II or a direct statement as a substitute:Paula sagt: „Ich komme gleich." (Paula says: "I'll be right back.")

→ Indikativ: Paula sagt, sie kommt gleich.

→ Konjunktiv II: Paula sagt, sie würde gleich kommen.

→ Konjunktiv I: Paula sagt, sie komme gleich.
