In this lesson, we will focus on verbs that require the accusative in German. The accusative is one of the four cases in the German language and is commonly used to indicate the direct object in a sentence. Verbs associated with the accusative often have specific meanings and functions within the sentence.
What is the Accusative?
The accusative indicates who or what is affected by the verb. For example, in the sentence:
- Ich sehe den Hund.
(The direct object is "den Hund").

Examples of Usage

Special Notes
Some verbs can also be used with the dative. In these cases, the structure of the sentences often changes. If you have both a direct and an indirect object, the direct object (accusative) is mentioned first:
- Ich gebe meiner Schwester ein Geschenk.
(I am giving my sister a present.) Here, "ein Geschenk" is in the accusative, and "meiner Schwester" is in the dative.
