In this lesson you will learn common German verbs that take an object in the Akkusativ and how to use them correctly in sentences. You can use these structures from level A2 up to B2.

The Akkusativ – quick recap

The Akkusativ usually marks the direct object – the person or thing directly affected by the action.

  • Ich sehe den Hund.
    (“den Hund” is the direct object in the Akkusativ.)
  • Sie kauft ein Buch.

Word order with Akkusativ

In a simple main clause, the Akkusativ object usually comes directly after the verb:

  • Ich lese den Text. (I read the text.)
  • Wir suchen den Bahnhof. (We are looking for the station.)

With two objects (Dativ + Akkusativ) German normally places the Dativ before the Akkusativ:

  • Ich gebe meiner Schwester (Dativ) ein Geschenk (Akkusativ).
    (I give my sister a present.)
  • Sie zeigt dem Lehrer (Dativ) die Hausaufgabe (Akkusativ).
    (She shows the homework to the teacher.)

Typical mistakes and tips

  1. Masculine accusative ending:

    • correct: Ich sehe den Mann. (I see the man.)
    • wrong: Ich sehe der Mann.

  2. Prepositions with Akkusativ together with these verbs:
    Some verbs plus prepositions also require Akkusativ after the preposition:

    • Ich warte auf den Bus. (I am waiting for the bus.)
    • Wir sprechen über den Film. (We are talking about the film.)

  3. Learn verbs as chunks:

  • jemanden anrufen: Ich rufe dich später an. (I’ll call you later.)
  • etwas suchen: Wir suchen eine Wohnung. (We’re looking for a flat.)
