Distinguishing types of indirect questions in German

After this lesson you can correctly build different types of German indirect questions with *ob* and question words and choose the right punctuation.

In this lesson you learn how to form and distinguish different types of indirect questions in German, which you need for polite and formal communication.

Overview: What is an indirect question?

An indirect question consists of a Hauptsatz (main clause) and a Nebensatz (subordinate clause). The actual question is in the Nebensatz.

  • Direct question: „Wann kommst du?“ (When are you coming?)
  • Indirect question (statement): Ich möchte wissen, wann du kommst. (I would like to know when you are coming.)
  • Indirect question (question): Kannst du mir sagen, wann du kommst? (Can you tell me when you are coming?)

In the Nebensatz the conjugated verb goes to the end.

1Yes/No questions with „ob“

Yes/No direct questions become indirect questions with ob.

Structure: Hauptsatz, ob + subject + … + verb

Typical openings for ob-questions:

  • Ich weiß nicht, ob … (I don’t know whether …)
  • Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob … (I am not sure whether …)
  • Können Sie mir sagen, ob …? (Can you tell me whether …?)

2W-questions with a question word

If the direct question begins with a question word (wer, was, wann, wo, warum, wie, welcher …), this question word stays in the indirect question.

Structure: Hauptsatz, question word + subject + … + verb

Very important: in the Nebensatz the verb is always at the end: wo das nächste Restaurant ist, not wo ist das nächste Restaurant.

3Punctuation: full stop or question mark?

The punctuation depends on the Hauptsatz, not on the Nebensatz.

  • Hauptsatz is a question (verb in position 1) → question mark

    • Kannst du mir sagen, ob ich die Aufgabe richtig gemacht habe? (Can you tell me if I did the exercise correctly?)
    • Weißt du, wann der Film beginnt? (Do you know when the film starts?)

  • Hauptsatz is a statement (verb in position 2) → full stop

    • Ich möchte wissen, wo wir uns treffen. (I would like to know where we will meet.)
    • Er hat gefragt, ob du Zeit hast. (He asked whether you have time.)

4Common openings for indirect questions

These phrases help you sound polite and natural:

  • Ich würde gerne wissen, … (I would like to know …)
  • Ich möchte wissen, … (I want to know …)
  • Ich frage mich, … (I wonder …)
  • Können Sie mir sagen, …? (Can you tell me …?)
  • Weißt du, …? (Do you know …?)
  • Haben Sie eine Ahnung, …? (Do you have any idea …?)
  • Ich habe keine Ahnung, … (I have no idea …)

Examples:

  • Ich würde gerne wissen, ob der Kurs schon begonnen hat. (I would like to know whether the course has already started.)
  • Ich frage mich, warum er heute nicht im Büro ist. (I wonder why he is not in the office today.)
