Distinguishing types of indirect questions in German

In this lesson, we will explore indirect questions in German, which allow us to inquire about information in a courteous and formal manner. Indirect questions are a special type of question that consists of a main clause (Hauptsatz) and a subordinate clause (Nebensatz), separated by a comma. There are two main types of indirect questions: yes/no questions and W-questions.

1. Indirect Questions

Indirect questions provide a unique approach to communication. Instead of asking directly, we convey the inquiry through a main clause.

Yes/No Questions

For yes/no questions, we use the word "ob." The structure is: main clause, ob + subject + ... + verb.

Example:

• Anna fragt: „Ist das Wetter schön?“ (Direct question)
  → Indirect question: Anna fragt, ob das Wetter schön ist.
  (Anna asks whether the weather is nice.)

W-Questions

For questions that start with a question word such as "was," "warum," or "wo," the structure is: main clause, question word + subject + ... + verb.

Example:

• Tom fragt: „Wo ist das nächste Restaurant?“ (Direct question)
  → Indirect question: Tom fragt, wo das nächste Restaurant ist.
  (Tom asks where the nearest restaurant is.)

2. Punctuation in Indirect Questions

The punctuation at the end of the indirect question depends on whether the main clause is a question or a statement.

• If the main clause is a question (verb in first position), the indirect question ends with a question mark.

Example:
Kannst du mir sagen, ob ich die Aufgabe richtig gemacht habe?
(Can you tell me if I did the homework correctly?)

• If the main clause is a statement (verb in second position), the indirect question ends with a period.

Example:
Ich möchte wissen, wo wir uns treffen.
(I would like to know where we will meet.)

3. Common Main Clauses

Here are some common main clauses that we use to pose indirect questions:

• Ich würde gerne wissen, ...
• Ich frage mich, ...
• Können Sie mir sagen, ...
• Weißt du, ...
• Ich habe keine Ahnung, ...
