Obwohl, Trotzdem hay Trotz?

This lesson shows how to express contrast with obwohl, trotzdem and trotz, and what sentence structure each one needs.

Overview: Meaning

All three express a contrast or something unexpected:

  • obwohl: introduces a subordinate clause (Nebensatz).
  • trotzdem: adverb in a main clause (Hauptsatz).
  • trotz: preposition with Genitiv (genitive case).

They are similar in meaning, but the grammar around them is different.

Obwohl

obwohl introduces a Nebensatz; the finite verb goes to the end.

Patterns:

  • Main clause, obwohl clause.
  • Obwohl clause, main clause.

Key points:

  • In the obwohl-clause, the conjugated verb is at the end:
    obwohl es regnet.
  • If the obwohl-clause comes first, the verb in the main clause stays on position 2:
    Obwohl es spät ist, möchte ich weiterlernen.

More examples:

  • Obwohl er krank ist, arbeitet er. (Although he is ill, he works.)
  • Er arbeitet, obwohl er krank ist. (He works although he is ill.)

Trotzdem

trotzdem is an adverb. It connects two main clauses and usually stands at the beginning of the second clause.

Patterns:

  • Main sentence. Trotzdem + verb + ...
  • Main sentence, trotzdem + verb + ...

Rules:

  • trotzdem occupies position 1, the verb stays on position 2:
    Trotzdem gehe ich spazieren.
  • In spoken German, trotzdem can also come after the verb:
    Es regnet, ich gehe trotzdem spazieren. (It’s raining, I still go for a walk.)

More examples:

  • Es ist spät, trotzdem lese ich weiter. (It’s late, nevertheless I keep reading.)
  • Ich habe wenig Zeit, ich lerne trotzdem Deutsch. (I have little time; I still study German.)

Trotz

trotz is a preposition and normally takes the Genitiv.

Pattern:

  • trotz + noun/pronoun in Genitiv.

Typical Genitiv forms:

  • des schlechten Wetters (of the bad weather)
  • der späten Stunde (of the late hour)
  • meiner Müdigkeit (of my tiredness)
  • seiner Krankheit (of his illness)

Examples:

  • Trotz des schlechten Wetters bleiben wir draußen. (Despite the bad weather, we stay outside.)
  • Trotz der späten Stunde ruft sie ihn an. (Despite the late hour, she calls him.)

Comparison: obwohl – trotzdem – trotz

All three can express the same situation with different structures:

Typical mistakes

  • "obwohl es regnet, ich gehe spazieren" → correct:
    Obwohl es regnet, gehe ich spazieren.
  • "trotzdem es regnet" → trotzdem never introduces a Nebensatz, it belongs to a main clause:
    Es regnet, trotzdem gehe ich spazieren.
  • "trotz das schlechte Wetter" → correct: trotz des schlechten Wetters.
