Temporal clauses with seit/seitdem, bis and während

In this lesson you learn how to build temporal clauses with seit / seitdem, bis and während, and which tenses typically go with them. All three conjunctions introduce a Nebensatz (subordinate clause) with the verb at the end.

1Temporal clauses with „seit / seitdem“

seit / seitdem express a period of time that begins in the past and continues up to now.

  • Structure:
    seit / seitdem + Nebensatz (verb at the end)
    The main clause is usually in the Präsens.

Here seit and seitdem are almost always interchangeable. seitdem sounds a bit more formal or emphatic.

Typical tenses:

  • Subordinate clause: Perfekt or Präsens
  • Main clause: mostly Präsens

2Temporal clauses with „bis“

bis describes an end point in the future or in the past.

  • Structure:
    Main clause, bis + Nebensatz (verb at the end)

Important:

  • In spoken German you usually don’t use Futur in a „bis“-clause:
    „Ich warte, bis du kommst.“ (not: bis du kommen wirst.)

3Temporal clauses with „während“

während expresses simultaneity: two actions happen in parallel.

  • Structure:
    Main clause, während + Nebensatz (verb at the end) or
    Während + Nebensatz, main clause

Compare:

  • Seit ich hier wohne, kenne ich viele Leute. → Focus on the starting point in the past and duration until now.
  • Während ich hier wohne, lerne ich viele Leute kennen. → Focus on actions that happen during this period, in parallel to „hier wohnen“.
