1. DA

- Like the conjunction WEIL, the conjunction DA is also used to state the reason for an event or action. The clause that goes with DA is a subordinate clause (Nebensatz):

Da es einen Unfall gibt, muss ich im Staub stehen.

(Because there is an accident, I am stuck in traffic.)

- The subordinate clause with DA can come before or after the main clause (Hauptsatz):

Da ich viel lernte, bestand ich die Prüfung.

= Ich bestand die Prüfung, da ich viel lernte.

(Because I studied hard, I passed the exam.)

- The two conjunctions WEIL and DA have similar functions and structures, so they can be used interchangeably:

Ich gehe nicht zur Schule, weil es regnet.

= Da es regnet, gehe ich nicht zur Schule.

(Because it is raining, I am not going to school.)

!!!! However, when the subordinate clause (Nebensatz) comes after the main clause (Hauptsatz), people usually use the conjunction WEIL. Conversely, when the subordinate clause comes before the main clause, people usually use the conjunction DA.

2. DESHALB

- DESHALB is used to connect a clause expressing a cause with a clause expressing a result. DESHALB goes with the main clause (Hauptsatz) that expresses the result/consequence of an action or thought:

Ich brauche Briefmarken, deshalb gehe ich zur Post.

(I need stamps, so I went to the post office.)

- A comma or a period can be used to separate the two clauses. DESHALB can also stand in position 3, after the verb in the sentence:

Ich brauche Briefmarken, deshalb gehe ich zur Post.

= Ich brauche Briefmarken. Ich gehe deshalb zur Post.

- DESHALB can be replaced by: DAHER, DARUM, DESWEGEN or AUS DIESEM GRUND.Ich brauche Briefmarken, deshalb gehe ich zur Post.

= Ich brauche Briefmarken, daher gehe ich zur Post.

= Ich brauche Briefmarken, aus diesem Grund gehe ich zur Post.
