DA

"DA" is used to indicate the reason behind an action. It introduces a subordinate clause that generally offers an explanation:
Example with DA Translation Da es spät ist, gehe ich nach Hause. Since it is late, I am going home. -
The subordinate clause using "DA" can appear before or after the main clause:
Structure Example Translation Before main clause Da ich müde bin, gehe ich ins Bett. Because I am tired, I am going to bed. After main clause Ich gehe ins Bett, da ich müde bin. I am going to bed because I am tired. -
"DA" and "WEIL" serve similar functions and can often be substituted for each other:
Example Translation Ich gehe nicht zur Schule, weil ich erkältet bin. I do not go to school because I have a cold. Da ich erkältet bin, gehe ich nicht zur Schule. Since I have a cold, I do not go to school.
DESHALB

"DESHALB" connects a main clause that describes the result of an action to another main clause that states the cause. It means "therefore" or "for this reason":
Example with DESHALB Translation Ich habe Hunger, deshalb koche ich etwas. I am hungry; therefore, I am cooking something. -
A comma or a period can separate the two clauses:
Structure Example Translation Example 1 Ich bin hungrig, deshalb gehe ich zum Restaurant. I am hungry; therefore, I am going to the restaurant. Example 2 Ich bin hungrig. Ich gehe deshalb zum Restaurant. I am hungry. Therefore, I am going to the restaurant. -
"DESHALB" can also be replaced with "DAHER", "DARUM", "DESWEGEN" or "AUS DIESEM GRUND":
Example Translation Ich möchte Pizza, deshalb gehe ich zur Pizzeria. I want pizza; therefore, I am going to the pizzeria. Ich möchte Pizza, daher gehe ich zur Pizzeria. I want pizza; therefore, I am going to the pizzeria.
