Zu Hause hay Nach Hause

After this lesson you can confidently choose between „zu Hause“ and „nach Hause“ and between „zu“ and „bei“ when talking about places in German.

In this lesson you will learn when to use zu Hause, nach Hause, Haus, Hause, zu, and bei in German. This will help you avoid very typical mistakes with place expressions.

1„Wo?“ or „Wohin?“ – zu Hause vs. nach Hause

Core rule

  • zu Hause → answers „Wo?“ (where, no movement)
  • nach Hause → answers „Wohin?“ (to where, movement/direction)

Examples

  • Wir sind heute zu Hause.
    (We are at home today.)
  • Ich bleibe heute Abend zu Hause.
    (I stay at home tonight.)
  • Ich gehe jetzt nach Hause.
    (I am going home now.)
  • Wir fahren morgen nach Hause.
    (We are driving home tomorrow.)

Note: zu Hause and nach Hause are fixed phrases, H is always capital.

2Haus or Hause?

Haus is the normal noun. Hause is an old dative form, used today almost only in fixed expressions.

  • Haus → normal noun: das Haus (the building, house)
  • Hause → dative in fixed phrases: zu Hause, nach Hause, von zu Hause

Examples

  • Das Haus neben der Schule ist neu.
    (The house next to the school is new.)
  • Ich besuche meine Eltern im Haus.
    (I visit my parents in the house.)
  • Ich fühle mich wohl bei mir zu Hause.
    (I feel comfortable at my place / at my home.)
  • Sie kommt spät nach Hause.
    (She comes home late.)

Remember:

  • Not zu Haus or nach Haus in standard German.
  • zu Hause can mean “in my flat / room / with my parents”, it does not have to be a separate house.

3„zu“ and „bei“ with persons

The same „Wo?“ / „Wohin?“ logic works with people.

  • zu + person (Dativ) → answers „Wohin?“ (movement to a person)
  • bei + person (Dativ) → answers „Wo?“ (staying with a person)

  • Kommst du heute zu mir?
    (Are you coming to my place today?)
  • Morgen gehe ich zu meiner Freundin.
    (Tomorrow I am going to my (female) friend.)
  • Ich war gestern bei meiner Freundin.
    (I was at my (female) friend’s yesterday.)
  • Heute Abend bin ich bei meinen Eltern.
    (This evening I am at my parents’ place.)

Good pattern to remember:

  • Wohin? → nach Hause, zu mir, zu meiner Freundin …
  • Wo? → zu Hause, bei mir, bei meiner Freundin …
