In this lesson you will learn three rather formal German prepositions: anhand, mittels, and mithilfe. All three express by what means / on what basis something is done, and in modern standard German they are used almost always with the Genitiv.

1Meaning and register

All three prepositions express a means, tool, or method.

  • anhand: roughly “on the basis of”, often with documents, examples, criteria.
  • mittels: “by means of / by using”, formal, common in technical, administrative, or academic texts.
  • mithilfe: “with the help of”, highlighting support or assistance.

2Case: almost always Genitiv

In contemporary standard German, anhand, mittels, and mithilfe normally take the Genitiv object.

In academic writing, reports, manuals, etc., anhand, mittels, and mithilfe are very frequent, while mit and durch are stylistically neutral and common in everyday speech.

4Typical mistakes to avoid

  • Do not use Dativ with an article after these prepositions in standard written German:
    • wrong: anhand einem Beispiel, mittels dem Computer
    • correct: anhand eines Beispiels, mittels des Computers
  • Word order: the prepositional phrase usually stands directly next to the verb it belongs to:
    • Die Daten werden mithilfe des neuen Computers sehr schnell analysiert.
