Präpositionen mit Dativ und Genitiv

After this lesson you can recognize the main German prepositions with Dativ and Genitiv and use them correctly in both formal and informal sentences.

In this lesson you will learn German prepositions that can take the Dativ or Genitiv, and how usage differs between spoken and written German.

1Basic rule: Dativ or Genitiv?

In standard German, the following prepositions normally require the Genitiv:

  • dank
  • trotz
  • wegen
  • innerhalb
  • ungeachtet
  • mithilfe
  • zufolge (almost only with Dativ, see below)

In everyday spoken German, trotz and wegen very often appear with Dativ, e.g. wegen dem Regen, trotz dem Verkehr. In formal texts and exams you should use Genitiv: wegen des Regens, trotz des Verkehrs.

Note on zufolge: the Genitiv form zufolge eines Berichts exists but is rare and very formal; the common structure is Dativ: dem Bericht zufolge.

3Position in the sentence

Most of these prepositions come before the noun:

  • Wegen des Unfalls war die Straße gesperrt. (Because of the accident the road was closed.)
  • Trotz des Lärms konnte ich einschlafen. (Despite the noise I was able to fall asleep.)

zufolge normally stands after the noun in the Dativ:

  • Dem Arzt zufolge ist die Operation gut verlaufen. (According to the doctor, the operation went well.)
  • Den neuesten Studien zufolge bewegen sich viele Menschen zu wenig. (According to the latest studies, many people exercise too little.)

4Typical mistakes and variants

Dativ instead of Genitiv in colloquial German

Colloquial speech:

  • Wegen dem Wetter bleiben wir zu Hause. (Because of the weather we stay at home.)
  • Trotz dem Stress hat sie die Prüfung geschafft. (Despite the stress she passed the exam.)

Standard / exam German (recommended):

  • Wegen des Wetters bleiben wir zu Hause. (Because of the weather we stay at home.)
  • Trotz des Stresses hat sie die Prüfung geschafft. (Despite the stress she passed the exam.)

Genitiv after „dank“

  • Dank meiner Eltern (Dativ, colloquial but common)
  • Dank der Unterstützung meiner Eltern (Genitiv, clearer and stylistically better)

5Memory tips

  • In formal writing and exams: dank, trotz, wegen, innerhalb, ungeachtet, mithilfe → use Genitiv.
  • zufolge almost only with Dativ and post‑positioned: der Zeitung zufolge.
  • If you are unsure when speaking, a Dativ form like wegen dem Auto will be understood, but in written German you should practise and prefer the Genitiv.
