Wechselpräpositionen

1Nine prepositions in this group

an – auf – hinter – in – neben – über – unter – vor – zwischen

The mnemonic

an – auf – hinter – in – neben – über – unter – vor – zwischen" — nine words, learn them rhythmically. Beyond these nine, no other prepositions change case.

2WO? ↔ WOHIN?

QuestionMeaningKasusExample
WO?Where — position, stationaryDativDas Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (It lies on the table.)
WOHIN?Where to — direction, destinationAkkusativIch lege das Buch auf den Tisch. (I put the book on the table.)

Understanding the word „movement" correctly

Not all movement requires Akkusativ! What matters is whether the position changes.

· Ich laufe im Park. — running inside the park, not leaving it → Wo? → Dativ. · Ich laufe in den Park. — running into the park from outside → Wohin? → Akkusativ.
