Preposition guide 4 — Prepositions + Dativ
aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu: detailed table for each preposition with questions, examples, and the -n ending for plural.
Dativ
Dativ indicates a person or thing at a position, a place, a point in time — often answers „for whom / with whom" or „where".
1Seven prepositions always take Dativ
aus – bei – mit – nach – seit – von – zu
The mnemonic
„Aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu → Dativ!" These seven words always go with Dativ, never with Akkusativ.
Common features:
- Used to indicate place, time, person, cause, means.
- Articles and adjectives change according to Dativ.
- Plural Dativ always adds -n to the noun: mit den Kindern.
2Details of each preposition
| Preposition | Meaning | Usage | Question | Example |

3Common phrases

- mit dem Auto (by car)
- nach Hause (to home)
- seit gestern (since yesterday)
- von meinem Freund (from my friend)

Remember one single thing
After these seven prepositions, always use Dativ — even if the sentence involves movement. Ich fahre nach Berlin is still Dativ, even though movement is clear. Movement only determines Kasus in the Wechselpräpositionen group (Section 6).
4Important note
Three classic mistakes
· Don't use Akkusativ with these seven prepositions. ✗ mit der Freund → ✓ mit dem Freund.
· Plural must add -n: ✗ mit den Kinder → ✓ mit den Kindern.
· nach Hause (going home, movement) is different from zu Hause (at home, no movement).
Comparison example:
| Incorrect sentence | Correct sentence | |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | ✗ Ich gehe mit der Freund. | ✓ Ich gehe mit dem Freund. |
| Plural | ✗ Ich spiele mit den Kinder. | ✓ Ich spiele mit den Kindern. |
| Home | ✗ Ich bin nach Hause. | ✓ Ich bin zu Hause. |
5Commonly used short form
| Full form | Short form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| bei dem | beim | beim Arzt (at the doctor's) |
| von dem | vom | vom Bahnhof (from the station) |
| zu dem | zum | zum Arzt (to the doctor) |
| zu der | zur | zur Schule (to the school) |
