Rule for am / im

· im + month, season, year: im März, im Winter, im Jahr 2026 · am + day, weekday, part of the day, holiday: am Montag, am Morgen, am Wochenende · um + exact time: um 7 Uhr

Exception to remember: in der Nacht (at night) — not „am Nacht".

Speak naturally

In practice, Germans almost always use the shortened forms: im Haus instead of „in dem Haus", am Bahnhof instead of „an dem Bahnhof". The full form is only used to emphasize the noun itself.

Countries with articles do not use nach

Most countries don't have articles, so use nach: nach Vietnam, nach Österreich. But countries with articles require in + Akkusativ:

· ✓ in die Schweiz (Switzerland), in die Türkei (Turkey), in die USA (USA) · ✗ „nach die Schweiz"
