Preposition guide 3 — Prepositions + Akkusativ

A1

durch, für, gegen, ohne, um (and bis, entlang): meanings, questions, common phrases, and easily confused pairs.

Akkusativ

Akkusativ indicates direction / destination or a change of position — answers the question „where to, what to do".

1Five prepositions that always take Akkusativ

durch – für – gegen – ohne – um

The mnemonic

Durch – Für – Gegen – Ohne – Um" — say it out loud five times to memorize. These are five prepositions that always go with Akkusativ, without exception.

They always answer the questions: Durch wen/was?, Für wen/was?, Gegen wen/was?, Ohne wen/was?, Um wen/was?

Two Akkusativ prepositions rarely taught

· bis — „until (up to)": bis nächsten Montag, bis 8 Uhr. When used alone, bis takes Akkusativ and often has no article. · entlang — „along": comes after the noun and takes Akkusativ: den Fluss entlang (along the river). This is a rare exception to the rule „prepositions always come before".
