SONST, SONSTIG, SONSTIGES

Sonst is a word used quite frequently in German. The adverb sonst has many meanings and therefore often causes confusion. Today's article will cover the adverb sonst along with the adjective sonstig and the noun Sonstiges.

1. The adverb sonst

a. Sonst stands at the beginning of a main clause (Hauptsatz), following a conditional clause with wenn or falls. It carries the meaning im anderen Fall, wenn nicht: otherwise, if not.

Wenn das Wetter gut ist, gehen wir spazieren. Sonst bleiben wir zu Hause.

(If the weather is nice, we will go for a walk. Otherwise we will stay at home.)

- Sonst can be used to connect two main clauses containing modal verbs. Sonst is used to describe choices and possibilities.

Das Wetter sollte schön sein, sonst bleiben wir zu Hause.

(The weather should be nice, otherwise we will stay at home.)

Wir können in den Supermarkt gehen, sonst können wir in den Park gehen.

(We can go to the supermarket, otherwise we can go to the park.)

- Sonst can also appear in other positions in the sentence, for example:

Ich möchte ein Brötchen mit Wurst. (I would like a small bread roll with sausage.)

Möchten Sie sonst noch etwas bestellen? (Would you like to order anything else?)

- Sonst can be replaced by the structure entweder …. oder, for example:

Ich renne zum Bahnhof, sonst verpasse ich den Zug.

(I run to the train station or I will miss the train.)

= Entweder ich renne zum Bahnhof oder ich verpasse den Zug.

(Either I run to the train station or I miss the train.)

- Sonst can be replaced by the synonyms außerdem, darüber hinaus. In this case, the clause with sonst usually contains noch in the sentence:

Ich nehme eine Suppe. Sonst nehme ich noch ein Brötchen mit Wurst.= Ich nehme eine Suppe. Außerdem nehme ich noch ein Brötchen mit Wurst.

(I will have some soup. Besides that, I will also have a small bread roll with sausage.)

2. The adjective sonstig

- The adjective sonstig is commonly used with the meaning of other (andere/anderes…), further (weitere/weiteres/..). These adjectives are also declined according to the standard adjective declension rules:

Die Frau hat Äpfel und sonstige Früchte verkauft.

(The woman sold apples and other kinds of fruit.)

3. The noun Sonstiges

- It has an equivalent meaning to the nouns Weiteres and Anderes:

Sonstiges ist der letzte Punkt auf der Tagesordnung.
