Telling time in German

After this lesson you can ask for, understand and tell the time in German in everyday situations.

Telling the time in German is essential for everyday life: classes, trains, meetings, appointments. In this lesson you learn how to ask for the time and how to give it in both official and everyday forms.

A. Asking for the time

The two most common questions are:

  • Wie spät ist es? (What time is it?)
  • Wie viel Uhr ist es? (What time is it?)

They are equivalent. A neutral basic answer is:

  • Es ist + Uhrzeit. (It is + time.)

Examples:

  • Wie spät ist es? – Es ist drei Uhr. (… three o’clock.)
  • Wie viel Uhr ist es? – Es ist halb fünf. (… half past four.)

B. Official time (24-hour system)

Used in timetables, news, announcements, forms. You use numbers from 0 to 24 and usually the word Uhr.

Structure:

  • Es ist + Stundenangabe + Uhr (+ Minuten).

Note: In spoken everyday German, people often prefer Es ist ein Uhr. instead of Es ist dreizehn Uhr., but on displays, emails, official texts you see the 24-hour form.

C. Informal time (everyday speech)

Here people usually use 1–12 for the hours and the words nach (past), vor (to), halb (half to), Viertel (quarter). The word Uhr is often dropped.

1Basic patterns

  • Es ist + Minuten + nach + Stunde. (… minutes past …)
  • Es ist + Minuten + vor + Stunde. (… minutes to …)
  • Es ist halb + nächste Stunde. (half past …, literally “half to the next hour”.)

Important: halb zwei means 1:30, literally “half an hour before two”.

2With „Viertel“ and „halb“

  • Es ist Viertel nach drei. (It is a quarter past three. → 3:15)
  • Es ist Viertel vor vier. (It is a quarter to four. → 3:45)
  • Es ist halb zwei. (It is half past one. → 1:30)

These forms are understood all over Germany.

3„fünf nach/ vor halb“

For :25 and :35 German often uses halb as the reference:

  • Es ist fünf vor halb acht. (It is twenty-five past seven. → 7:25)
  • Es ist fünf nach halb sieben. (It is twenty-five to seven. → 6:35)

D. „Um … Uhr“ – times for appointments

When you say when something happens, you use um:

  • Der Kurs beginnt um neun Uhr. (The course starts at nine o’clock.)
  • Wir treffen uns um halb drei. (We meet at half past two.)
  • Der Film fängt um Viertel nach acht an. (The film starts at a quarter past eight.)

E. Small tips

  • In very informal speech, you can drop Es ist: Viertel nach drei.
  • Pay attention to number pairs that sound similar: vier / fünf, drei / zwei.
