Counting numbers in German. The counting numbers in German from 1 – 12 have no rules. In today's article we will explore together the counting numbers and how counting numbers are formed in German!!!

In today's article, we will explore cardinal numbers and how they are formed in German!!!

1. From 0–12

0: null

1: eins

2: zwei

3: drei

4: vier

5: fünf

6: sechs

7: sieben

8: acht

9: neun

10: zehn

11: elf

12: zwölf

   

2. From 13–19: Add the suffix „zehn" to the numbers 3–9

13: dreizehn

14: vierzehn

15: fünfzehn

16: sechzehn

17: siebzehn

18: achtzehn

19: neunzehn

 

!!!Note: in the numbers 16 and 17, the suffix "s" is dropped for 16 and the suffix "en" for 17.

3. 20, 30, 40,….90: Instead of adding the suffix „zehn" we add the suffix „zig" — note the two exceptions:

20: zwanzig

30: dreißig

40: vierzig

50: fünfzig

60: sechzig

70: siebzig

80: achtzig

90: neunzig

3. 21, 22, 23,… 97, 98, 99: Units digit + und + Tens digit

21: einundzwanzig

22: zweiundzwanzig

23: dreiundzwanzig

44: vierundvierzig

45: fünfundvierzig

46: sechsundvierzig

67: siebenundsechzig

68: achtundsechzig

!!! Note: the suffix "s" in eins is dropped.

4. 100, 200, 300,.....900: Add the suffix „hundert" after the numbers from 1 - 9

100: einhundert

200: zweihundert

300: dreihundert

400: vierhundert

500: fünfhundert

600: sechshundert

700: siebenhundert

800: achthundert

900: neunhundert

   

5. 101, 102, 103,....999: Read the hundreds place first, then the tens place

128: einhundertachtundzwanzig

128: hundertachtundzwanzig

236: zweihundertsechsunddreißig

405: vierhundertfünf

6. 1000, 2000, …. 9000: Add the suffix „tausend" after the numbers from 1 - 9

1000: eintausend

2000: zweitausend

3000: dreitausend

4000: viertausend

7. 1001, 1345, ……9999: Read the thousands place, then the hundreds place, then the tens place

1923: eintausendneunhundert dreiundzwanzig

2745: zweitausendsiebenhundert fünfundvierzig

3386: dreitausenddreihundert sechsundachtzig

!!! Note: the number 1923 can also be read as neunzehnhundert dreiundzwanzig
