Levels of German language training

After this lesson you can distinguish the GER levels A1–C2 and know what learners can typically do at each level.

Before starting a German course, it helps to understand the official GER levels (A1–C2). This way you can set clear goals and choose the right course.

Overview of the GER levels

The “Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen für Sprachen (GER)” divides language skills into six levels.

How to choose your level

  • If you know almost no German, start at A1.
  • If you already understand and say simple sentences, take a placement test to decide between A1 and A2.
  • For work or study in Germany, you often need at least B1 or B2, depending on employer or university.

Each level builds on the previous one. A solid A2 is more useful than a weak B1; focus on quality, not speed.
