After this lesson you can write simple formal and informal German letters on A1–A2 level using common standard phrases.

In this lesson you learn useful standard sentences for letters and e‑mails on levels A1 and A2. We look at informal letters (to friends, family) and formal letters (to offices, companies, teachers). All examples are in German and can be used in letters, e‑mails or messages.

Opening (Anrede)

Informal (friends, family):

Phrase	Explanation
Lieber + Name,	opening to a man, e.g. „Lieber Thomas,“
Liebe + Name,	opening to a woman, e.g. „Liebe Anna,“
Hallo + Name,	neutral, very informal

Formal (authorities, companies, unknown people):

Reacting to a previous letter / e‑mail

Asking about how someone is

Closing formulas

Informal:
