Plusquamperfekt

B1Past perfect
Als ich ankam, war der Zug schon abgefahren.

When I arrived, the train had already left.

EXPLANATION

The Plusquamperfekt shows that one past action was completed before another past action. Form it with hatte or war + Partizip II.

The Plusquamperfekt (past perfect) describes an action that was already finished before another past action. It is formed with hatte or war + Partizip II.

Choose hatte or war in the same way as in the Perfekt: most verbs take haben, while verbs of movement or change of state often take sein. The earlier past action can appear in the main clause or in the subordinate clause; with conjunctions like nachdem it is typically in the subordinate clause in Plusquamperfekt.

Use Plusquamperfekt when the order matters: first action A, then past action B. If the time order is already clear from context, German often uses Präteritum or Perfekt instead. With bevor, als and nachdem, Plusquamperfekt can appear in the main clause or the subordinate clause, depending on where the earlier action is expressed.

STRUCTURE

hatte/war (conjugated) + Partizip II

Use the same auxiliary as in the Perfekt of the verb.

  • Ich hatte den Brief schon geschrieben, bevor ich ihn abschickte.I had already written the letter before I sent it off.
  • Wir waren früh angekommen, deshalb warteten wir lange. We had arrived early, so we waited a long time.
Plusquamperfekt in main clause or subordinate clause (e.g. with bevor, als, nachdem), depending on where the earlier action is expressed.

The earlier action can be in either clause; with nachdem it is typically in the subordinate clause in Plusquamperfekt.

  • Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich wieder ins Büro.After I had eaten, I went back to the office.
  • Bevor sie losfuhr, hatte sie den Motor geprüft.Before she drove off, she had checked the engine.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Als ich ankam, hatte der Zug schon abgefahren.

Als ich ankam, war der Zug schon abgefahren.

Abfahren uses sein, so the auxiliary must be war. Hatte is wrong here.

  • Ich war die Mail schon geschrieben, bevor ich ins Büro ging.

Ich hatte die Mail schon geschrieben, bevor ich ins Büro ging.

Schreiben takes haben, so the correct form is hatte geschrieben. The earlier action is the writing, not the going.

  • Sie hatte bereits eingeschlafen, als die Gäste kamen.

Sie war bereits eingeschlafen, als die Gäste kamen.

Einschlafen uses sein. The adverb bereits fits well with Plusquamperfekt to show the earlier action.

  • Wir waren das Ergebnis vorher gesehen, nicht erst danach.

Wir hatten das Ergebnis vorher gesehen, nicht erst danach.

Sehen takes haben, so hatten gesehen is correct. War gesehen would not match the verb.

USAGE NOTES

  • Plusquamperfekt is mainly used in stories, reports and explanations of earlier past events.
  • The choice between hatte and war does not depend on tense level, but on the verb’s Perfekt auxiliary.
  • Signal words like schon and bereits often make the earlier action easier to notice, but they are not required.
  • The earlier action can be in the main clause or the subordinate clause; with nachdem it is typically in the subordinate clause in Plusquamperfekt.
