Konjunktiv II der Gegenwart

B1Konjunktiv II present
Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich endlich wieder reisen.

If I had more time, I would finally travel again.

EXPLANATION

Use Konjunktiv II der Gegenwart for an unreal or more polite meaning. Most verbs take würde + Infinitiv; the important exceptions are sein, haben, modal verbs and a few frequent strong verbs.

Konjunktiv II der Gegenwart expresses things that are not real now: unreal conditions, wishes, advice and polite requests. For most verbs, German uses würde + Infinitiv; for sein, haben, the modal verbs and a few common strong verbs, there are special forms like wäre, hätte, könnte and gäbe.

STRUCTURE

Konjunktiv II with most verbs: würde (conjugated) + infinitive

Use this pattern for most verbs in everyday speech.

  • Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich reisen. If I had more money, I would travel.
  • Wir würden im Sommer umziehen. We would move in summer.
  • Er würde heute früher kommen. He would come earlier today.
Special forms: sein → wäre, haben → hätte, modal verb → Konjunktiv II form

These forms are common and usually preferred over würde sein or würde haben.

  • Ich wäre jetzt gern am Meer.I would like to be at the sea now.
  • Wir hätten heute Zeit.We would have time today.
  • Sie könnten später anrufen. You could call later.
Without wenn: the Konjunktiv II form stands first in the clause

This structure is common in formal writing and also in careful speech.

  • Wüsste ich die Antwort, könnte ich dir helfen. If I knew the answer, I could help you.
  • Wäre ich heute frei, käme ich mit.If I were off today, I would come with you.
  • Ich wünschte, ich wäre heute frei.I wish I were off today.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Wenn ich mehr Geld habe, würde ich ein Auto kaufen.

Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich ein Auto kaufen.

After wenn in an unreal present condition, use Konjunktiv II. Habe is present tense and does not express this meaning.

  • Konnte Sie mir helfen?

    Könnten Sie mir helfen?

With the polite pronoun Sie, the verb können must be correctly conjugated as könnten in a polite Konjunktiv II request. Konnte Sie mir helfen? is incorrectly conjugated and does not give the intended polite meaning.

  • An deiner Stelle wird ich langsamer fahren.

An deiner Stelle würde ich langsamer fahren.

For advice, German normally uses the hypothetical pattern würde + Infinitiv. Here the finite verb must be würde ich, not the third-person present form wird ich.

  • Ich hätte Zeit, würde ich dich besuchen.

Hätte ich Zeit, würde ich dich besuchen.

For condition clauses without wenn, the finite verb must come first: Hätte ich Zeit, .... The sentence Ich hätte Zeit, würde ich dich besuchen. keeps normal word order and therefore does not follow this pattern.

USAGE NOTES

  • In conversation, würde + Infinitiv is often the safest choice for most verbs. The special forms sound natural mainly with sein, haben, modal verbs and a few very common strong verbs.
  • Würde is not used with sein and haben in standard style when the special forms wäre and hätte are possible. Ich würde sein is usually avoided.
  • For conditions without wenn, put the conjugated verb first: Hätte ich Zeit, .... This is common in written German and in careful speech.
  • Sollte often gives advice, but it can also sound less direct or more formal than du solltest. Choose the tone carefully.
