Futur II

B1Future perfect
Bis Freitag werde ich den Bericht geschrieben haben.

By Friday I will have written the report.

EXPLANATION

Use Futur II when you want to show that an action will already be completed at a later time. Very often, the same form is used for an assumption about the past: Er wird den Zug verpasst haben means Er hat den Zug wahrscheinlich verpasst.

The Futur II is formed with werden + Partizip II + haben or sein. It shows that something will be finished by a certain time in the future, for example Bis Freitag werde ich den Bericht geschrieben haben.

STRUCTURE

werden (conjugated) + Partizip II + haben/sein (infinitive)

Use this pattern for an action that is completed before a future point.

  • Bis Freitag werde ich den Bericht geschrieben haben.By Friday I will have written the report.
  • Morgen um acht werden wir schon angekommen sein.Tomorrow at eight we will already have arrived.
  • Bis dahin wird sie die Prüfung bestanden haben.By then she will have passed the exam.
werden (conjugated) + Partizip II + haben/sein

This same form often means a guess about a past event.

  • Er wird den Zug wohl verpasst haben. He probably missed the train.
  • Sie wird schon zu Hause angekommen sein. She will already have arrived home.
  • Die Nachricht wird ihn sicher überrascht haben. The news will certainly have surprised him.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Bis Freitag werde ich den Bericht schreiben haben.

Bis Freitag werde ich den Bericht geschrieben haben.

The future-completion meaning needs werden + Partizip II + haben. The infinitive schreiben is not enough here.

  • Er wird den Zug verpassen haben.

Er wird den Zug verpasst haben.

For a past assumption, German uses Futur II with haben and the Partizip II verpasst. The form verpassen is the infinitive and does not fit.

  • Um 18 Uhr wird der Bus schon sein abgefahren.

Um 18 Uhr wird der Bus schon abgefahren sein.

With verbs of movement like abfahren, sein is the auxiliary in Futur II. The order must be Partizip II before sein.

  • Bis morgen früh werden Sie die Aufgabe erledigt sein.

Bis morgen früh werden Sie die Aufgabe erledigt haben.

The auxiliary must be haben here, not sein. The Partizip II erledigt stays before the infinitive haben.

USAGE NOTES

  • In everyday speech, people often express the ‘future-completion’ meaning with the present or the perfect plus a future time expression (for example: Bis Freitag habe ich den Bericht fertig), but in grammar Futur II is the standard form.
  • For assumptions about the past, wohl, sicher, wahrscheinlich and similar words are very common: Er wird wohl zu spät gekommen sein.
  • Remember the auxiliary choice: many verbs of change or movement take sein; most other verbs take haben.
  • The Partizip II stays in the middle of the verbal bracket, and the infinitive of the auxiliary goes to the end: wird ... geschrieben haben.
