Zweiteilige Konnektoren
We buy both bread and fruit.
EXPLANATION
These connectors join two equal or contrasting parts in one sentence. Learn the fixed pair, then place each part in the right position.
Zweiteilige Konnektoren are fixed pairs: sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, entweder … oder, nicht nur … sondern auch, zwar … aber. The first part comes before the first idea, the second part before the second idea. When the connector starts the sentence, the finite verb still stays in second position in the first clause: Entweder kommst du mit, oder du bleibst hier.
STRUCTURE
sowohl + Satzteil/Nomen + als auch + Satzteil/NomenUse this for two positive facts that both apply.
- Wir essen sowohl in der Mensa als auch zu Hause. We eat both in the cafeteria and at home.
- Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch. She speaks both German and English.
- Sowohl der Bahnhof als auch das Hotel sind nah. Both the station and the hotel are close.
weder + Satzteil/Nomen + noch + Satzteil/NomenThe verb often agrees with the closer or more important subject; in practice, singular and plural are both possible depending on meaning.
- Ich kaufe weder Kaffee noch Tee.I buy neither coffee nor tea.
- Er hat weder Zeit noch Geduld. He has neither time nor patience.
- Weder mein Bruder noch meine Schwester kommt heute.Neither my brother nor my sister is coming today.
entweder + Satzteil/Nomen + oder + Satzteil/NomenThis pattern presents a real choice between two options.
- Entweder wir nehmen ein Taxi, oder wir laufen.Either we take a taxi or we walk.
- Entweder du rufst heute an, oder du schreibst morgen eine E-Mail.Either you call today, or you write an email tomorrow.
- Entweder Kaffee oder Tee ist in Ordnung.Either coffee or tea is fine.

COMMON MISTAKES
Ich habe nicht Zeit noch Geld.
Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld.
Weder … noch is the correct pair for a negative alternative. Nicht alone does not create the two-part structure.
Entweder rufst du an, und du schreibst eine Nachricht.
Entweder rufst du an, oder du schreibst eine Nachricht.
If the sentence starts with entweder, the second part needs oder. The verb still stays in second position in each clause.
Die Tasche ist nicht nur teuer, aber auch praktisch.
Die Tasche ist nicht nur teuer, sondern auch praktisch.
After nicht nur, the second part is sondern auch. Aber gives contrast, but it does not fit this exact pair.
Sowohl die Lehrerin als auch die Schüler ist pünktlich.
Sowohl die Lehrerin als auch die Schüler sind pünktlich.
With sowohl … als auch, the verb is usually plural when the connected parts refer to more than one person or thing.
USAGE NOTES
- In speaking and writing, keep the two parts close to the ideas they connect; do not separate them too far.
- Sowohl … als auch and nicht nur … sondern auch usually add information. Weder … noch and entweder … oder set up a choice or a double negation.
- At the start of a sentence, the first clause has normal verb-second order: Entweder komme ich heute, oder ich komme morgen.
- Do not use je … desto here. That pattern belongs to a later level and means a proportional relation.
