Temporalsätze: als, wenn, während, bis, seit
When I was a child, I used to play by the river every summer.
EXPLANATION
Temporal clauses answer when something happens. The choice of connector depends on whether the time is single, repeated, simultaneous, limited, or still continuing.
These conjunctions introduce temporal clauses, so the verb goes to the end of the clause. Use als for one finished event or period in the past, wenn for repeated events in the past and for present or future, während for actions at the same time, bis for the end point of a situation, and seit/seitdem for something that started in the past and still continues. If the temporal clause comes first, the main clause uses inversion: the verb moves to position 2.
STRUCTURE
Temporal conjunction + Nebensatz (verb at the end)Use the connector that matches the time meaning: one past event, repeated past, present/future, or simultaneous actions.
- Als ich nach Hause kam, schlief mein Sohn schon. When I came home, my son was already asleep.
- Wenn wir im Sommer Ferien hatten, fuhren wir ans Meer. When we had summer holidays, we used to go to the sea.
seit / seitdem + present tense for a continuing stateThe situation starts in the past and is still true now.
- Ich arbeite hier seit drei Jahren.I have been working here for three years.
- Seitdem sie umgezogen ist, fährt sie mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.Since she moved, she rides to work by bike.
bis + time limit / während + simultaneous actionBis points to the end of an action; während points to parallel actions.
- Wir warten, bis der Zug ankommt. We are waiting until the train arrives.
- Während ich sprach, schrieb sie alles auf. While I was speaking, she wrote everything down.

COMMON MISTAKES
Wenn ich in Berlin wohnte, lernte ich viel Deutsch.
Als ich in Berlin wohnte, lernte ich viel Deutsch.
Use als for one completed period in the past, not wenn.
Immer als wir uns trafen, sprachen wir über Arbeit.
Immer wenn wir uns trafen, sprachen wir über Arbeit.
Repeated past actions need wenn. Als would suggest only one meeting.
Seit zwei Monaten arbeitete ich hier.
Seit zwei Monaten arbeite ich hier.
With seit, when the situation continues into the present, German normally uses the present tense, not the simple past or the present perfect. Here the job is still ongoing, so arbeite is correct.
Während ich telefonierte, er kochte das Essen.
Während ich telefonierte, kochte er das Essen.
When the temporal clause (Während ich telefonierte) comes first, the main clause needs inversion: the finite verb (kochte) comes before the subject (er). In the wrong sentence the main clause starts with the subject, so the word order is incorrect.
USAGE NOTES
- In these clauses, the finite verb goes at the end: als ich klein war, wenn du kommst, während sie arbeitet.
- Als is only for past time. Do not use it for habits in the present or for future plans.
- Seit and seitdem are usually followed by the present tense when the situation is still true now.
- When the temporal clause comes first, the main clause has inversion: Als ich ankam, war die Tür offen.
