Wechselpräpositionen — Einführung

A1Two-way prepositions: location
Die Milch steht im Kühlschrank.

The milk is in the fridge.

ERKLÄRUNG

The nine Wechselpräpositionen use the Dativ when they answer Wo? — where something is or stays. For this A1 point, focus only on location, not movement.

The nine Wechselpräpositionen are in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen. For location, answer Wo? and use the Dativ: im Kühlschrank, auf dem Tisch, an der Wand, neben dem Bett. The contractions im = in dem and am = an dem are very common.

For this lesson, remember one simple rule: Wo? means Dativ. Wohin? means Akkusativ and comes later at A2. So all practice sentences here describe a place, not a movement. Do not learn these prepositions as “always Akkusativ” or “always Dativ”; first check the question.

STRUKTUR

Wechselpräposition + Dativ article after Wo?

Use this pattern for a place or a fixed position.

  • Das Handy liegt auf dem Sofa. The phone is on the sofa.
  • Die Jacke hängt an der Tür.The jacket hangs on the door.
  • Wir sitzen vor dem Kino.We are sitting in front of the cinema.
in dem → im; an dem → am

These contractions are especially common with masculine and neuter nouns.

  • Die Bücher sind im Schrank. The books are in the cupboard.
  • Die Uhr hängt am Fenster. The clock hangs at the window.
  • Das Bild ist im Zimmer. The picture is in the room.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Das Bild hängt an die Wand.

Das Bild hängt an der Wand.

With location (Wo?), an needs the dative, so der Wand is correct. An die Wand is for movement (Wohin?), which is not the focus here.

  • Der Schlüssel liegt auf den Tisch.

Der Schlüssel liegt auf dem Tisch.

Auf also takes the dative for location. Den Tisch is accusative and fits movement, not the place question Wo?.

  • Die Katze ist unter das Bett.

Die Katze ist unter dem Bett.

For a place, unter needs the dative. Dem Bett is the correct dative form; das Bett after the preposition is wrong here.

  • Wir warten vor den Bahnhof.

    Wir warten vor dem Bahnhof.

With Wo?, vor takes the dative. Vor den Bahnhof would be accusative and point to movement, not location.

HINWEISE

  • The same preposition can be Dativ or Akkusativ. The question tells you which one: Wo? = Dativ, Wohin? = Akkusativ.
  • Use contractions when they are natural: im and am are very common in everyday German.
  • Über usually means “over” or “above” in a location sentence, for example Das Bild hängt über dem Sofa. Do not confuse this with über in movement contexts.
  • In this lesson, all exercises are only Wo? sentences. The Wohin? use of these prepositions is practised later at A2.
