LERNPFAD · A1 · Grundlegende Kommunikation im Alltag
Uhrzeit und Zeitangaben
At 8 o'clock, the lesson starts.
ERKLÄRUNG
To ask for the time, use Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? For an appointment or departure time, use Um wie viel Uhr ...?
Use um for exact clock times: um 8 Uhr, um 14:30 Uhr. For everyday spoken time, Germans often use halb, Viertel nach, and Viertel vor. Time phrases also work like set expressions: am with days and parts of the day, im with months and seasons, in der Nacht with in. For periods, use von ... bis; for a starting point, use ab. If a time phrase comes first, the verb stays in second position: Am Montag arbeite ich.

- In everyday speech, halb drei means 2:30, not 3:30. Think of it as “halfway to three.”
- Am Morgen, am Abend, am Nachmittag are normal, but in der Nacht uses in.
