Trennbare Verben

A1Separable verbs
Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.

I get up at 7 o'clock.

ERKLÄRUNG

A separable prefix is stressed and goes to the end of a main clause. With a modal verb, the separable verb stays together at the end: Ich muss einkaufen.

Separable verbs have a prefix such as an-, auf-, aus- or mit-. In a main clause, that prefix moves to the end: Ich stehe auf, Ich rufe dich an.

STRUKTUR

finite verb in position 2 + prefix at the end

Use this pattern in a main clause with a separable verb.

  • Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.I get up at 7 o'clock.
  • Er ruft seine Mutter an.He calls his mother.
  • Wir laden euch ein.We invite you.
modal verb (conjugated) + separable verb as one infinitive at the end

Do not split the verb after a modal verb.

  • Ich muss heute noch einkaufen.I have to go shopping today.
  • Wir wollen früh aufstehen. We want to get up early.
  • Du kannst mich morgen anrufen. You can call me tomorrow.
inseparable prefix + verb stays together

These prefixes do not move: be-, ver-, er-, ent-, emp-, ge-, miss-, zer-.

  • Ich verstehe dich gut.I understand you well.
  • Sie bekommt heute Besuch. She has visitors today.
  • Er erklärt die Aufgabe. He explains the task.

  • In a main clause, only the finite verb goes to position 2; the prefix goes to the end. In a Nebensatz, the whole verb stays together at the end.
  • With a modal verb, you write the separable verb as one infinitive: Ich will aufstehen, Wir müssen einkaufen.
  • Not every verb with a prefix is separable. bekommen, verstehen, erklären and entdecken do not separate.
