Possessivartikel

A1Possessive articles
Ich sehe meinen Hund und deine Katze.

I see my dog and your cat.

ERKLÄRUNG

In A1 you need only Nominativ and Akkusativ. The possessive article takes the same endings as ein: no ending for masculine and neuter nominative, -e for feminine and plural, and -en in masculine accusative.

Possessivartikel are words like mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer, Ihr. They show ownership or a close relation and usually stand before a noun like an article: mein Vater, deine Tasche, unser Haus.

STRUKTUR

Possessivartikel + Nomen

This is the basic pattern for possession before a noun.

  • Mein Bruder wohnt in Berlin. My brother lives in Berlin.
  • Deine Tasche ist dort.Your bag is over there.
  • Unser Haus ist alt.Our house is old.
Akkusativ masculine: Possessivartikel + -en

Only masculine singular changes clearly in A1 Akkusativ.

  • Ich sehe meinen Vater.I see my father.
  • Sie kauft ihren Laptop. She buys her laptop.
  • Wir besuchen euren Freund. We visit your friend.
euer + ending / no ending

euer drops the extra -e- before endings: eure, euren, eurem.

  • Euer Auto ist neu.Your car is new.
  • Eure Wohnung ist klein.Your apartment is small.
  • Euer Kind schläft.Your child is sleeping.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Ich suche mein Schlüssel.

    Ich suche meinen Schlüssel.

Schlüssel is masculine, and the accusative needs -en.

  • Unsere Sohn ist noch klein.

    Unser Sohn ist noch klein.

Sohn is masculine in the nominative, so the possessive article has no ending.

  • Das ist ihr Wohnung.

    Das ist ihre Wohnung.

Here ihr means their; the feminine nominative needs -e.

  • Ich sehe meinen Mutter.

    Ich sehe meine Mutter.

Mutter is feminine, so in the accusative the possessive article needs the ending -e, not -en.

HINWEISE

  • sein can mean his or its; the context tells you which one.
  • ihr can mean her, their, or your; only the capitalization in Ihr shows the formal address.
  • In this lesson, do not use dative forms like meinem or deinem Mann as the main rule; those come later.
  • With plural nouns, the possessive article usually looks like meine, deine, seine, ihre, unsere, eure, Ihre.
