Unbestimmter Artikel: ein, eine

A1Indefinite article
Da ist ein Hund. Der Hund ist groß.

There is a dog. The dog is big.

ERKLÄRUNG

Use ein or eine when you mention someone or something for the first time, or when it is not a specific known one. In the nominative, the form depends on gender: ein for masculine and neuter, eine for feminine.

The indefinite article in the nominative is ein for masculine and neuter nouns and eine for feminine nouns: ein Mann, eine Frau, ein Kind. It is used for something new, one of many, or first mention: Da ist ein Hund. Der Hund ist groß. In the plural, there is no indefinite article: Das sind Äpfel. After sein with professions and nationalities, German usually has no article: Ich bin Lehrer, Ich bin Vietnamesin. For negation, learners also meet kein, but that belongs to another lesson.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Das ist eine Lehrer.

    Das ist ein Lehrer.

The noun Lehrer is masculine, so the indefinite article must be ein, not eine.

  • Das sind ein Äpfel.

    Das sind Äpfel.

Plural nouns do not use ein or eine. The plural sentence stands without an indefinite article.

  • Da ist eine Hund.

    Da ist ein Hund.

Hund is a masculine noun, so you must use the masculine indefinite article ein, not eine.

  • Das ist ein Italienerin.

    Das ist eine Italienerin.

Italienerin is a feminine noun, so the indefinite article must be the feminine form eine, not ein.

HINWEISE

  • Ein and eine are used only in the singular.
  • Use the indefinite article for something not yet known to the listener, and the definite article after it becomes known.
  • After sein with a job title or nationality, German often has no article: Ich bin Arzt, Ich bin Italienerin.
  • Do not mix this point with kein. Kein means negation and has its own form and use.
