Präsens — Verben mit Vokalwechsel
In du and er/sie/es, the vowel changes: du sprichst, er spricht; all other persons stay regular.
ERKLÄRUNG
In the Präsens of many strong verbs, only the stem vowel changes in du and er/sie/es. You still add the usual personal endings.
Strong verbs with a stem-vowel change keep the normal endings in Präsens. The vowel changes only in du and in er/sie/es; the other persons stay regular: wir sprechen, ihr sprecht, sie sprechen. Common patterns are e → i or e → ie, a → ä, and au → äu; a few verbs like wissen, werden and mögen are special and must be memorized.

TYPISCHE FEHLER
Du nehmst den Bus.
Du nimmst den Bus.
With du, nehmen changes e → i: du nimmst. Nehmst is the regular-looking form and is wrong here.
Er fahrt nach Hause.
Er fährt nach Hause.
With er/sie/es, fahren changes a → ä: er fährt. Fahrt is the plural form.
Wir liest jeden Tag.
Wir lesen jeden Tag.
The vowel change does not appear in wir; only du and er/sie/es change. So lesen stays unchanged here.
Sie weißt es nicht.
Sie weiß es nicht.
Wissen is irregular: sie weiß. Weißt is the du form, not sie.
HINWEISE
- Do not add the vowel change to every person. Forms like wir fahren and ihr fahrt stay regular.
- The ending is still important: du sprichst, not just sprich. The stem vowel changes and the person ending work together.
- Sehen and lesen in the Präsens: du siehst, er sieht; du liest, er liest. That long vowel is part of the change.
- Mögen, wissen and werden are special verbs. Learn them as fixed forms, not as one general pattern.
