gern, lieber, am liebsten

A1gern, lieber, am liebsten
Ich trinke gern Tee, aber lieber Kaffee.

I like drinking tea, but I prefer coffee.

ERKLÄRUNG

Gern is the basic word for saying you like doing something. Lieber and am liebsten show comparison: one choice is better, or best.

Use gern with a verb to say that you like doing something: Ich schwimme gern. It comes after the conjugated verb, and if there is a pronoun object, it comes after that too: Ich rufe dich gern an. To compare choices, use lieber; for the strongest preference, use am liebsten. With nouns, German usually uses mögen: Ich mag Pizza. For an activity, you can also use gern instead of mögen: Ich schwimme gern. For a wish now, use möchte, not gern.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Ich spiele gern nicht Fußball.

    Ich spiele nicht gern Fußball.

In negation, nicht comes before gern: nicht gern means "do not like". So you say Ich spiele nicht gern Fußball, not Ich spiele gern nicht Fußball.

  • Ich trinke gern Wasser als Cola.

Ich trinke lieber Wasser als Cola.

Lieber compares two options. Gern does not show a comparison, so it is too weak here.

  • Ich mag jetzt gern einen Kaffee trinken.

Ich möchte jetzt gern einen Kaffee trinken.

To express a polite wish right now, for example when ordering a drink, use möchte, not mag. Mag describes a general liking, while möchte is the polite form for what you want at this moment.

  • Ich gern helfe dir.

    Ich helfe dir gern.

In German, the conjugated verb must be in second position, and gern usually comes after the verb and after a pronoun object like dir: Ich helfe dir gern. The sentence Ich gern helfe dir has incorrect word order.

HINWEISE

  • Gern is usually placed after the conjugated verb: Ich lese gern. With separable verbs, it still stays in the middle: Ich rufe dich gern an.
  • Use lieber only when you compare two choices: lieber Tee als Kaffee. If there is no comparison, use gern or am liebsten.
  • Am liebsten often answers questions like Was machst du am Wochenende? It means your favorite activity or choice.
  • For nouns, prefer mögen: Ich mag Brot. For a polite wish in the moment, use möchte: Ich möchte Brot.
