TYPISCHE FEHLER
Ich können heute nicht kommen.
Ich kann heute nicht kommen.
Kann is the correct ich form. Können is the infinitive, not the finite verb in position 2.
Wir muss früh aufstehen.
Wir müssen früh aufstehen.
After wir, the modal verb needs the plural form müssen. The infinitive aufstehen stays together at the end.
Du darf hier nicht rauchen.
Du darfst hier nicht rauchen.
Darfst is the correct form for du. Darf is the er/sie/es form, so it does not match the subject.
Ich möchten bitte zahlen.
Ich möchte bitte zahlen.
Möchte is the polite singular form. Möchten is used for wir/Sie or as the polite plural form.
HINWEISE
- The modal verb comes in position 2 in a main clause. The infinitive goes to the end, even with two verbs: Ich muss früh aufstehen.
- Nicht dürfen means not to be allowed. Nicht müssen means not to have to. These are different meanings.
- Möchte is the polite form used for wishes and requests: Ich möchte einen Kaffee.
- The vowel change happens only in the singular forms: kann, muss, will, darf.
