Negation: nicht und kein

A1kein and nicht
Ich habe kein Auto.

I don't have a car.

ERKLÄRUNG

German has two basic negation words: kein and nicht. Kein negates nouns; nicht negates everything else.

Use kein to negate a noun that would normally come with ein or with no article: kein Auto, keine Zeit, keinen Bruder. Kein changes like the ein-article and must match gender, number and case. Use nicht for verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, and nouns with a definite or possessive article: nicht kommen, nicht teuer, nicht in Berlin, nicht der Vater, nicht mein Buch.

STRUKTUR

kein + noun with ein meaning / no article

Use the ending that matches gender, number and case.

  • Ich habe kein Geld.I don't have any money.
  • Wir haben keine Kinder. We don't have children.
  • Er hat keinen Hund.He doesn't have a dog.
nicht + adjective / adverb / prepositional phrase / verb phrase

Put nicht right before the adjective, adverb or prepositional phrase you want to negate. When you negate the whole sentence with a simple verb, nicht usually comes at the end: Ich komme heute nicht.

  • Das ist nicht gut. That is not good.
  • Ich komme heute nicht.I'm not coming today.
  • Ich wohne nicht in Berlin.I don't live in Berlin.

ÜBERSICHT

When to use kein and nicht

UseGermanExample
noun with ein / no articlekein / keine / keinenIch habe kein Auto.
masculine noun in AkkusativkeinenIch habe keinen Bruder.
adjective, adverb, verb, phrasenichtDas ist nicht teuer.
noun with definite or possessive articlenichtDas ist nicht mein Buch.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Ich habe nicht Auto.

    Ich habe kein Auto.

Auto is a noun without a definite or possessive article here, so use kein.

  • Der Film ist kein spannend.

    Der Film ist nicht spannend.

Nicht negates the adjective spannend. Kein does not negate adjectives on their own; it must go with a noun.

  • Ich wohne kein in Berlin.

    Ich wohne nicht in Berlin.

With a prepositional phrase, nicht comes before the phrase. Kein is impossible here.

  • Ich habe kein Bruder.

    Ich habe keinen Bruder.

Bruder is masculine in the Akkusativ, so the ending is -en.

HINWEISE

  • Use doch as the answer to a negative question or to correct a negative statement: Kommst du nicht? — Doch.
  • With nouns that have a definite article or a possessive article, use nicht: nicht der Mann, nicht mein Bruder.
  • Position matters: nicht usually comes at the end if it negates the whole sentence, but before the part you want to negate.
  • Kein follows the endings of ein: kein, keine, keinen, keinem, keiner (and keines in the Genitiv).
