Modalverben: sollen, dürfen, mögen
The doctor says: I should sleep more.
ERKLÄRUNG
These modal verbs have different meanings that learners often mix up: sollen for advice or instruction from outside, dürfen for permission, mögen for liking, and möchte for a wish now.
Sollen is used when advice, an instruction, or an order comes from outside, and also in questions when you ask for advice: Soll ich …? Dürfen means permission, and nicht dürfen means prohibition. Nicht müssen means something is not necessary, not that it is forbidden. Mögen expresses general liking; möchte expresses a wish now, often politely. Nicht brauchen zu is another way to say that something is not necessary, with the same meaning as nicht müssen at this level.
STRUKTUR
sollen (conjugated) + infinitive at the end; in advice questions: Soll ich / sollen wir + infinitive?Use sollen when the idea comes from outside the speaker.
- Der Lehrer sagt, wir sollen ruhig bleiben. The teacher says we should stay calm.
- Meine Mutter sagt, ich soll früher kommen. My mother says I should come earlier.
- Soll ich dir helfen?Should I help you?
dürfen (conjugated) + infinitive; negative: nicht dürfen = prohibition, nicht müssen = not necessaryNicht dürfen and nicht müssen are easy to confuse, so look at the meaning carefully.

Du darfst hier nicht rauchen.
Modal verbs must be conjugated to match the subject. With du, the correct form of dürfen is darfst, not the infinitive dürfen.

Ich mag diesen Film.
With the subject ich, the modal mögen must be conjugated as mag. Do not use the infinitive mögen after ich.

After a modal verb, the main verb stays in the infinitive. Here you must use sein, not the finite form sind.

Hier darf man nicht fotografieren.
After the modal dürfen you do not use zu before the infinitive. The correct sentence is Hier darf man nicht fotografieren., meaning that taking photos is forbidden here.
HINWEISE
- In polite questions, sollen often sounds like asking for advice, not giving an order: Soll ich warten?
- Dürfen is about permission from a person, a rule, or a sign: Hier darf man …
- At this level, nicht brauchen zu and nicht müssen can both mean that something is unnecessary.
- Do not confuse mögen with möchte: mag = general liking, möchte = wish now.
