Präpositionen mit Genitiv — Einführung

A2Genitive prepositions
Wegen des Regens bleiben wir zu Hause.

Because of the rain, we are staying at home.

ERKLÄRUNG

Use wegen, trotz, während and statt/anstatt with the genitive when you write carefully. They show cause, contrast, time or replacement.

These four prepositions can govern the genitive: wegen, trotz, während, and statt/anstatt. In careful written German, use the genitive forms des, der, des, der and, with masculine and neuter nouns, often add -s or -es: wegen des Regens, trotz des Wetters, während des Tages.

STRUKTUR

preposition + genitive article + noun

Use this pattern for a noun phrase after the preposition.

  • Wegen des Wetters bleiben wir im Hotel.Because of the weather, we are staying in the hotel.
  • Trotz der Müdigkeit lernt er weiter.Despite the tiredness, he keeps studying.
preposition + des/der/des/der + noun with -s/-es on masculine/neuter nouns

Masculine and neuter nouns often add -s or -es in the genitive.

  • Wegen des kalten Wetters bleiben wir zu Hause.Because of the cold weather, we are staying at home.
  • Während des Unterrichts telefoniert niemand.During the lesson, nobody makes phone calls.
statt/anstatt + genitive noun phrase

Statt and anstatt are interchangeable in this use.

  • Statt eines Taxis nehmen wir den Bus.Instead of a taxi, we take the bus.
  • Anstatt des Briefes schicke ich eine Nachricht.Instead of the letter, I send a message.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Wegen des Stau kommen wir zu spät.

Wegen des Staus kommen wir zu spät.

Wegen takes the genitive in standard written German. Masculine nouns in the genitive usually add -s or -es, so it must be des Staus, not des Stau.

  • Trotz den Regens gehen wir raus.

Trotz des Regens gehen wir raus.

Trotz takes the genitive, so the masculine noun Regen needs the article des, not den: trotz des Regens.

  • Während die Pause essen wir etwas.

Während der Pause essen wir etwas.

After während, use the genitive article der with the feminine noun Pause.

  • Statt das Auto nehme ich den Bus.

Statt des Autos nehme ich den Bus.

Statt means “instead of” and takes the genitive here: statt des Autos.

HINWEISE

  • In everyday speech, wegen and trotz are often heard with the dative, but in written standard German you should use the genitive.
  • Während can also mean “while” with two simultaneous actions: Während ich koche, hört er Musik. This lesson focuses on the genitive use before a noun phrase.
  • Statt and anstatt mean the same thing. Anstatt is a little more formal, but both work with the genitive here.
  • Do not mix these with wegen + noun in the dative from everyday speech if the task or text asks for correct written German.
