Nebensätze mit wenn

A2Wenn-clauses
Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich vorbei.

If I have time, I’ll stop by.

ERKLÄRUNG

Wenn starts a Nebensatz that gives a condition or a repeated/future time. The verb in that clause goes to the end.

Wenn introduces a Nebensatz (subordinate clause) for a condition or a repeated/future time. The conjugated verb goes to the end of the wenn-clause: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich später. If the wenn-clause comes first, the main clause starts with the verb: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich; often you can also add dann in the main clause. Use ob for indirect yes/no questions, not for conditions. For a single event in the past, German often uses als; that is a different topic.

STRUKTUR

wenn + Subjekt + … + Verb am Ende, Hauptsatz

Use this pattern for conditions and general future results.

  • Wenn ich frei habe, besuche ich meine Schwester. If I’m free, I visit my sister.
  • Wenn du Hilfe brauchst, sag mir Bescheid. If you need help, let me know.
  • Wenn wir am Wochenende arbeiten, bekommen wir mehr Geld.If we work on the weekend, we get more money.
wenn-Nebensatz vorne + Verb im Hauptsatz an Position 1

If the wenn-clause comes first, the main clause does not start with the subject.

  • Wenn der Zug verspätet ist, nehme ich den Bus.If the train is delayed, I take the bus.
  • Wenn die Kinder schlafen, macht die Mutter das Licht aus. When the children are asleep, the mother turns off the light.
  • Wenn der Kurs endet, gehen wir nach Hause. When the class ends, we go home.
ob + Nebensatz

Use ob for indirect yes/no questions, not for conditions.

  • Ich frage mich, ob er heute kommt.I wonder whether he is coming today.
  • Ob sie Zeit hat, weiß ich nicht.I don’t know whether she has time.
  • Ich weiß nicht, ob wir morgen fahren.I don’t know whether we are leaving tomorrow.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Wenn ich Zeit habe komme ich später.

Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich später.

Wenn introduces the condition, and the verb komme stays in the main clause after the comma.

  • Ich weiß nicht, wenn er morgen kommt.

Ich weiß nicht, ob er morgen kommt.

Use ob for an indirect yes/no question. Wenn would mean a condition or a time clause, which is not the meaning here.

  • Wenn es ist kalt, tragen wir Jacken.

Wenn es kalt ist, tragen wir Jacken.

The conjugated verb in the wenn-clause goes to the end: ist.

  • Wenn der Film beginnt, wir sitzen schon im Kino.

Wenn der Film beginnt, sitzen wir schon im Kino.

In a first-position wenn-clause, the main clause starts with the verb sitzen.

HINWEISE

  • Wenn can mean both condition and repeated/future time. The context tells you which meaning fits.
  • In the main clause, dann is optional. It often makes the result clearer but is not required.
  • Do not use wenn for a single completed past event. Use als there, but that belongs to a later point.
  • At this level, the key pattern is word order: comma, then the verb at the end of the Nebensatz.
