Höfliche Bitten: möchte, hätte gern, würde, könnte

A2Polite requests
Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?

Could you please help me?

ERKLÄRUNG

Use möchte, hätte gern, könnte and würde to ask politely for things or help. They are softer than direct imperatives like Geben Sie ...!

Polite requests in German often use fixed Konjunktiv II phrases, not the full Konjunktiv II system. The most common forms are Ich möchte ..., Ich hätte gern ..., Könnten Sie ...? and Würden Sie bitte ...? They sound softer than a direct command and are standard in shops, restaurants, offices and emails. In many situations, bitte makes the request more friendly, but the main politeness comes from the verb form.

STRUKTUR

ich / wir / er / sie / es + möchten + …

Use möchte to express a polite wish, not a strong desire.

  • Ich möchte einen Kaffee.I would like a coffee.
  • Wir möchten bitte zwei Karten. We would like two tickets, please.
  • Er möchte heute früher gehen. He would like to leave earlier today.
haben in Konjunktiv II + gern

Hätte gern is very common in cafés, restaurants and shops.

  • Ich hätte gern eine Suppe.I would like a soup.
  • Hätten Sie Zeit für mich?Would you have time for me?
  • Wir hätten gern noch Wasser. We would like some more water.
Konjunktiv II with können / werden + Sie/du + …

These forms are polite requests, not statements about ability or future.

  • Könnten Sie mir helfen?Could you help me?
  • Würden Sie bitte warten?Would you please wait?
  • Könntest du das wiederholen?Could you repeat that?

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Ich habe gern eine Suppe.

    Ich hätte gern eine Suppe.

Hätte gern is the standard polite way to say you want something or want to do something. Ich habe gern ... means you like having something, so it does not work as a request in a restaurant or shop.

  • Könnte Sie mir bitte helfen?

    Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?

With the polite pronoun Sie, the verb must be in the plural form könnten; Könnte Sie ... is the wrong person/number.

  • Würde Sie bitte das Fenster öffnen?

Würden Sie bitte das Fenster öffnen?

With polite Sie, the Konjunktiv II form must be würden, not würde, so Würde Sie ... is incorrectly conjugated.

  • Wäre es möglich, Sie später kommen?

Wäre es möglich, dass Sie später kommen?

After Wäre es möglich, you need a dass-clause; Wäre es möglich, Sie später kommen? is ungrammatical because it omits dass before the subordinate clause.

HINWEISE

  • Ich möchte ... and Ich hätte gern ... are fixed polite phrases. Learners should not try to build them like normal simple past or conditional sentences.
  • In restaurants and shops, Ich hätte gern ... is very common when ordering food, drinks or tickets.
  • With Sie, the polite request forms are Könnten Sie ...? and Würden Sie ...?. With du, you can also use Könntest du ...? or Würdest du ...? in friendly situations.
  • A direct imperative like Geben Sie mir ...! is stronger. Use it only when the situation is very direct, urgent, or when the speaker has clear authority.
