In this lesson you will learn common B1/B2‑level verb and adjective patterns that use the preposition „von“ and how to use them correctly.

1Meaning of „von“ in these patterns

In these structures „von“ usually expresses:

origin / source: „Er träumt von einem besseren Leben.“ (he dreams of a better life)
topic / content: „Sie erzählt von ihrem Urlaub.“ (she talks about her vacation)
cause / reason: „Ich bin müde von der Arbeit.“ (I am tired from work)

These verbs always take „von“ + Dative. Learn them as fixed combinations.

abhängen von	Das Ergebnis hängt von dir ab.	the result depends on you
träumen von	Er träumt von einem Haus am Meer.	he dreams of a house by the sea
erzählen von	Sie erzählt von ihrer Kindheit.	she talks / tells about her childhood
überzeugen von	Ich will ihn von meiner Idee überzeugen.	I want to convince him of my idea
profitieren von	Viele Firmen profitieren von der Reform.	many companies benefit from the reform
ablenken von	Musik lenkt mich von meinen Sorgen ab.	music distracts me from my worries
sich erholen von	Sie erholt sich von der Operation.	she is recovering from the operation
sich trennen von	Sie hat sich von ihrem Freund getrennt.	she split up with her boyfriend

After „von“ you always use Dative: „von dem Mann“ → „von dem Mann“ / „vom Mann“.
Word order with separable verbs:
- Present: „Das hängt von dir ab.“ (main verb part 1 – middle field – part 2)
- Perfect: „Es hat von dir abgehangen.“

Many adjectives describe an emotional reaction to something. They also take „von“ + Dative.

begeistert von	Sie ist begeistert von dem Konzert.	she is enthusiastic about the concert
enttäuscht von	Ich bin von dem Ergebnis enttäuscht.	I am disappointed with the result
überzeugt von	Wir sind von ihrem Talent überzeugt.	we are convinced of her talent
müde von	Ich bin müde von den Diskussionen.	I am tired of the discussions
gelangweilt von	Die Schüler sind von der Wiederholung gelangweilt.	the students are bored by the repetition
beeindruckt von	Der Chef ist von deiner Arbeit beeindruckt.	the boss is impressed by your work

Confusing „von“ and „über“:
- „erzählen von“ = to tell / talk about in general: „Er erzählt von seiner Reise.“
- „erzählen über“ is rare in standard German and often sounds odd.
„abhängig von“ – never „abhängig auf“.
„von“ never with accusative: always Dative („von dem Kind“, not „von das Kind“).

Fill in „von“ or another preposition (solution idea in brackets):
- „Ich bin müde ___ der Arbeit.“ (von)
- „Das hängt ___ dem Wetter ab.“ (von)
- „Wir sprechen morgen ___ dem Projekt.“ (über)
