Comparative (Komparativ)

A2B1

After this lesson, you will be able to confidently form and use the comparative in German.

Introduction

In this lesson, we will explore the comparative form (Komparativ) in German, which is essential for making comparisons between two entities. Understanding the comparative will enable you to express differences in your conversations effectively.

Formation of the Comparative

The comparative is generally formed by adding the suffix -er to adjectives. Here are some examples:

PositiveComparativeTranslation
schnellschnellerfast → faster
großgrößerbig → bigger
kleinkleinersmall → smaller
teuerteurerexpensive → more expensive

Special Cases

However, there are particular rules to note:

  • Adding Umlaut: For one-syllable adjectives containing the vowels a, o, or u, an Umlaut is added.

    • alt → älter (old → older)
    • hoch → höher (high → higher)
  • Words ending in -el or -er: Adjectives ending in -el drop the e and add -er:

    • dunkel → dunkler (dark → darker)
    • flexibel → flexibler (flexible → more flexible)
  • Irregular Forms: Some adjectives have irregular comparative forms:

    • gut → besser (good → better)
    • viel → mehr (much → more)

Comparison with „als"

To compare two different objects, we use the structure with "als."

  • Structure: S1 + verb + adjective (comparative) + als + S2.

Here are some examples:

  • My sister is smarter than I am.
(Meine Schwester ist schlauer als ich.)
  • This table is heavier than that one.
(Dieser Tisch ist schwerer als der dort.)

Alternative Structure

You can also use the structure with "aber" to show contrast:

  • The house is nice, but my house is nicer.
(Das Haus ist schön, aber mein Haus ist schöner.)

Exercises

Try to complete the following sentences:

  1. The car is ______ (fast) than the bike.
  2. My new shoes are ______ (pretty) than my old ones.

Conclusion

With the comparative, you can make effective and interesting comparisons in German. Practice to internalize the structure and improve your ability to communicate differences between objects.
