Adverbs of Location - Lokaladverbien

In this lesson you learn the most common Lokaladverbien (adverbs of location) such as hier, dort, oben, unten and their forms with nach and von. Lokaladverbien answer the questions wo?, wohin? and woher? and they never change their form.

What are Lokaladverbien?

Lokaladverbien say where something is or in which direction something moves.

• Question wo? → position / place
• Question wohin? → direction (movement to a place)
• Question woher? → origin (movement from a place)

They are invariable: hier always stays hier, there are no plural or case forms.

Lokaladverbien for the question wo?

Common pairs:

• rechts – links
• vorn(e) – hinten
• oben – unten
• hier – da / dort
• außen – innen
• draußen – drinnen

Examples

• Die Katze ist oben auf dem Tisch. (The cat is on the table, not below.)
• Der Ball liegt hinten im Zimmer. (The ball is at the back of the room.)
• Hier ist mein Buch. (My book is here, near me.)
• Die Kinder spielen draußen. (The children are playing outside.)

For direction we usually add nach:

• nach rechts – nach links
• nach vorn(e) – nach hinten
• nach oben – nach unten
• nach außen – nach innen
• nach draußen – nach drinnen

Examples

• Wohin gehst du? – Ich gehe nach draußen. (Where are you going? – I am going outside.)
• Bitte stell das Regal nach oben. (Please move the shelf upstairs / to a higher place.)
• Wir fahren nach links. (We drive to the left.)
• Komm nach vorne! (Come to the front.)

• von draußen – von drinnen
• von hier – von dort / von da

Examples

• Ich komme von oben. (I am coming from above.)
• Woher kommst du? – Ich komme von drinnen. (Where are you coming from? – I am coming from inside.)
• Das Geräusch kommt von da. (The noise comes from there.)

• Wohin fährt der Bus? – Der Bus fährt nach dort. (Where is the bus going? – The bus is going there.)
