Adverbs of Location - Lokaladverbien

Locative adverbs (Lokaladverbien/Ortsadverbien) describe the position or direction of a person or object. These adverbs cannot be declined or inflected and answer the questions wo? wohin? woher? In today's article, we will explore these adverbs together.

1. Lokaladverbien answering the question wo?

• rechts – links

• vorn(e) – hinten

• oben – unten

• hier – da/dort

• außen – innen

• draußen – drinnen

• irgendwo – nirgendwo

• drüben

• nebenan

• woanders

• überall

Example:

• Der Wein ist unten im Keller. (The wine is down in the cellar.)

• Paul steht draußen und raucht. (Paul is standing outside, smoking.)

• Dort wächst ein alter Baum. (An old tree grows there.)

2. Lokaladverbien answering the question wohin?

• nach rechts – nach links

• nach vorne /vorwärts – nach hinten / rückwärts

• nach oben / aufwärts – nach unten/ abwärts

• nach außen – nach innen

!!! Note: A few adverbs can become adjectives to add meaning to the nouns that follow them:

• dort → die dortigen Verhältnisse

• innen/außen/oben/unten/hinten → das untere Stockwerk

• rechts/links → auf der lrechten Seite
