In German, there are 3 articles that typically accompany nouns: Der, Die, Das. These 3 articles are used to identify the gender of a noun:

  • der (Masculine) refers to objects of masculine gender
  • die (Feminine) refers to objects of feminine gender
  • das (Neuter) refers to objects of neuter gender

For nouns in the plural form, die is always used

Nouns ending in the following suffixes:

  • -ung: Entschuldigung, Leitung
  • -ion: Diskussion, Information
  • -schaft: Freundschaft, Eigenschaft
