Indirekte Fragen

B1Indirect questions
Können Sie mir sagen, ob der Zug pünktlich ist?

Can you tell me whether the train is on time?

ERKLÄRUNG

Indirect questions are embedded questions. They look like statements, so the verb goes to the end; only the question word or ob shows that it is a question.

Indirect questions are subordinate clauses after verbs and expressions like Ich weiß nicht, Ich frage mich, Können Sie mir sagen or Es ist unklar. The verb goes to the end, so there is no question inversion like in a direct question. For indirect W-Fragen, keep the question word: wo, wann, wie, warum, wohin. For yes/no questions, use ob; do not use wenn here, because wenn means a condition or repeated time situation, not a yes/no question. In polite service situations, indirect questions sound more natural and respectful.

STRUKTUR

reporting phrase + question word + Nebensatz with verb at the end

Use this for W-Fragen in indirect speech or polite requests.

  • Ich weiß nicht, wo die Haltestelle ist.I don't know where the stop is.
  • Es ist unklar, wann der Kurs beginnt. It is unclear when the course begins.
  • Wir fragen uns, wie man das Ticket bezahlt. We wonder how one pays for the ticket.
reporting phrase + ob + Nebensatz with verb at the end

Use ob for yes/no questions; do not use wenn here.

  • Können Sie mir sagen, ob der Bus schon da ist?Can you tell me whether the bus is already here?
  • Ich frage mich, ob sie heute Zeit hat.I wonder whether she has time today.
  • Weißt du, ob der Laden offen bleibt?Do you know whether the shop stays open?

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Ich frage mich, wo ist mein Ticket.

Ich frage mich, wo mein Ticket ist.

After ich frage mich, the indirect question keeps wo. The verb goes to the end.

  • Weißt du, ob arbeitet er heute?

Weißt du, ob er heute arbeitet?

A yes/no question needs ob, not a question order with inversion.

  • Können Sie mir sagen, wie komme ich zum Hotel?

Können Sie mir sagen, wie ich zum Hotel komme?

In an indirect question, the verb stays at the end and there is no inversion after wie.

  • Es ist unklar, wenn der Laden noch offen ist.

Es ist unklar, ob der Laden noch offen ist.

Wenn expresses condition or time, not an indirect yes/no question.

HINWEISE

  • Indirect questions are often used after reporting verbs and expressions of uncertainty: ich weiß nicht, ich möchte wissen, es ist unklar.
  • Use ob only for yes/no questions. For information questions, keep the original question word.
  • Do not use question word order in the embedded clause. Compare Wo ist der Bahnhof? with Ich weiß nicht, wo der Bahnhof ist.
  • Wenn is a common trap. It belongs to time or conditional clauses, not to indirect yes/no questions.
