lassen
I have my car repaired.
ERKLÄRUNG
lassen can mean 'have/let something done' or 'allow', and it also works as a full verb meaning 'leave'. In the Perfekt, the causative use normally takes a double infinitive.
lassen has two very different uses at B1. First, it means 'to have/let something happen': Ich lasse mein Auto reparieren, Ich lasse mir die Haare schneiden, Sie lässt ihre Kinder allein spielen. Second, it is a full verb meaning 'to leave behind': Ich habe den Schlüssel liegen gelassen. In the Perfekt of the causative use, German usually uses the double infinitive: Ich habe das Auto reparieren lassen.
STRUKTUR
lassen (conjugated) + Akkusativ + InfinitivUse this when someone causes or allows an action to happen.
- Ich lasse mein Auto reparieren.I have my car repaired.
- Wir lassen die Kinder im Hof spielen. We let the children play in the yard.
- Sie lässt ihren Bruder warten. She keeps her brother waiting.
lassen (conjugated) + Dativpronomen + Akkusativ + InfinitivThis pattern is common with body parts, clothes, and services.
- Ich lasse mir die Haare schneiden.I am getting my hair cut.
- Ich lasse mir die Zähne kontrollieren.I am having my teeth checked.
- Sie lässt sich die Jacke ändern. She is having the jacket altered.
haben (conjugated) + Objekt + Infinitiv + lassen / Partizip II of full verbThe causative use usually forms the Perfekt with a double infinitive; the full verb meaning 'leave' uses regular Partizip II.
- Ich habe das Auto reparieren lassen.I had the car repaired.
- Sie hat sich die Haare schneiden lassen. She got her hair cut.
- Wir haben den Schlüssel zu Hause liegen gelassen. We left the key at home.

TYPISCHE FEHLER
Ich lasse mich die Haare schneiden.
Ich lasse mir die Haare schneiden.
With body parts or personal things, German often uses mir for the person who benefits. mich is the wrong case here.
Ich habe das Auto repariert gelassen.
Ich habe das Auto reparieren lassen.
In the Perfekt, the causative use of lassen usually needs the double infinitive. gelassen would mean 'left' as a full verb.
Ich lasse mein Auto repariert.
Ich lasse mein Auto reparieren.
In the causative construction with lassen, the following verb must be in the infinitive, not the past participle. repariert is the wrong form here.
Ich habe den Schlüssel gelassen.
Ich habe den Schlüssel liegen gelassen.
Here lassen is a full verb meaning 'leave behind'. In neutral German, the bare gelassen can sound incomplete; the fixed combination liegen gelassen is natural.
HINWEISE
- After modal verbs, the infinitive of lassen comes at the end: Wir müssen ihn warten lassen.
- For parts of the body or clothes, lassen often takes mir/dir/sich instead of a direct object with meine...: Ich lasse mir die Haare schneiden.
- Do not confuse the causative lassen with the full verb meaning 'leave behind'. Compare the Perfekt of the causative pattern with that of the full verb: Ich lasse den Bus fahren / Ich habe den Bus fahren lassen (causative: 'I let the bus go') vs. Ich habe den Schlüssel liegen gelassen (full verb: 'I left the key lying / left the key behind').
- In the imperative, short forms are common: Lass mich! / Lasst uns!
