Adjektivdeklination nach unbestimmtem Artikel und ohne Artikel
I have a big dog.
ERKLÄRUNG
After ein, kein, and possessive articles, the adjective often has a weak ending. Without an article, the adjective must carry the case ending itself. That is the rule behind the idea: someone has to show the case.
With ein, kein, and possessive articles like mein, the adjective usually ends in -en. It takes the stronger ending only where the article has no ending, especially in nominative masculine and neuter and accusative neuter: ein großer Mann, ein kleines Kind, mein alter Koffer. Without an article, the adjective does the full job of the article and shows case, gender, and number itself: kalter Kaffee, frische Brötchen, mit frischem Brot. The key idea is: if the article already shows the case, the adjective is weak; if nobody shows it, the adjective becomes strong. In the genitive masculine and neuter without an article, the adjective still ends in -en: trotz starken Regens.
STRUKTUR
unbestimmter Artikel / Possessivartikel / kein + Adjektiv + NomenIf the article has no ending, the adjective shows the gender or case with the ending.
- Das ist ein neuer Laptop. That is a new laptop.
- Sie kauft keine teure Tasche. She is not buying an expensive bag.
- Ich kenne meinen netten Nachbarn.I know my nice neighbor.
ohne Artikel + Adjektiv + NomenWithout an article, the adjective takes the strong ending and marks the case itself.
- Wir trinken kalten Tee.We are drinking cold tea.
- Mit frischem Brot schmeckt die Suppe besser. With fresh bread, the soup tastes better.
- Es gibt frische Tomaten. There are fresh tomatoes.
Genitiv masculine/neuter without article + Adjektiv -enThis is a special ending pattern learners often forget.
- trotz starken Regensdespite heavy rain
- wegen kalten Wettersbecause of cold weather
